An emotional roller coaster. Queen Charlotte<\/em> took Bridgerton<\/em><\/a> fans on a journey into the past to explore the origins of King George III’s (Corey Mylchreest<\/strong>) marriage to Queen Charlotte<\/a> (India Amarteifio<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

Viewers of Queen Charlotte<\/em> saw the couple fall in love while coming to terms<\/a> with George’s declining mental health. Throughout the Netflix series, flashbacks revealed that Charlotte and George were able to rule over Britain<\/a> after welcoming their first child.<\/p>\n

Scenes from present day meanwhile, confirmed that George (James Fleet<\/strong>) was no longer fit to run the nation. The show, which is set between season 2 and 3 of Bridgerton<\/em><\/a>, focused on Charlotte’s (Golda Rosheuvel<\/strong>) plans to expand their linage with a royal heir. She convinced her sons to settle down in order to give her grandchildren, who would later take over the throne.<\/p>\n

Ahead of the show’s May 2023 premiere, Amarteifio discussed how royal history was altered<\/a> in order to bring the story to life.<\/p>\n

“It\u2019s definitely not a historical retelling \u2014 it\u2019s a reimagining of history, so that gave us a lot of freedom. But also, there are nods to the real history, too. We see Charlotte traveling from Germany, her relationship with her brother, her dogs, the snuff. I did as much research as I thought was sensible,” the actress told Vogue<\/em>. “I read Janice Hadlow<\/strong>\u2019s book about Georgian history [The Strangest Family: The Private Lives of George III, Queen Charlotte and the Hanoverians<\/em>], and I went to Kew Gardens, where they lived, and saw her cottage. We got to have a private tour and I even saw the armchair Charlotte died in. Being there, I felt such a connection to her.”<\/p>\n

The Sex Education<\/em> alum admitted she was “constantly overwhelmed” about doing Charlotte justice on screen.<\/a><\/p>\n

“Going into Blenheim Palace felt like the biggest thing ever, but then the costumes were just gorgeous, and the jewelry, and all the sets were huge. I was like, ‘Oh my God!’ and that was perfect because Charlotte\u2019s entering this new world too,” she continued. “There\u2019s a lot riding on it obviously, but when we were on set, there were also moments when you forgot how big it was and you felt like you were just making a film with your friends. I think if I\u2019d constantly been thinking about people\u2019s expectations of the show, it would\u2019ve been too much.”<\/p>\n

Amarteifio said it was important for her and creator Shonda Rhimes<\/strong><\/a> to shine a light on several different experiences<\/a>. “There were so many reasons to create it. In Bridgerton, Golda created this iconic character, this mixed-race woman who people saw as a queen, and that\u2019s not something we really see,” she added. “When I got the script for Queen Charlotte<\/em>, I thought, ‘When I was 15, did I ever see myself represented as a queen? Never.’ And this isn\u2019t a story about misfortune \u2014 it\u2019s about a Black woman who, against all odds, became part of one of the most powerful monarchies in the world. We don\u2019t brush the subject of race under the carpet, either \u2014 we explore it.<\/p>\n

The U.K. native concluded: “She is different but that\u2019s not the issue \u2014 it\u2019s society that needs to change. For me, it would\u2019ve been an honor to be part of the Bridgerton universe anyway, but it\u2019s even more special because this show lays the foundations for Bridgerton and shows us how that world became so diverse and beautiful. We also look at class, mental health, sexuality and gender, and I feel like all of that is so important.”<\/p>\n

Charlotte attempted to get to the bottom of George’s secrets as the twosome continued to face personal issues. Charlotte ultimately chose to fight for her marriage and stood by George’s side as he quietly faced his declining mental health.
\nPresent: After welcoming 15 kids with George, Charlotte moved out and continued to rule on her own as her husband took a turn for the worse. She attempted to force her sons to get married so they could give her an heir to the throne. Charlotte initially faced resistance from her children but was able to bond with her kids throughout the limited series. One of her sons revealed that his wife was expecting a child in the finale — which Charlotte shared with George.

Unbeknownst to Charlotte, George was dealing with a decline in his mental health. He wasn’t able to get an answer from any physician about what was causing the neurological issues. As George grew closer to Charlotte, he became more concerned about her finding out about his psychological problems. He returned to his original home after Charlotte saw him during an episode and continued dangerous treatments. Charlotte eventually came to his aid and remained by his side. The couple welcomed their first child and found out they were expecting a second in the finale.
\nPresent: George returned to living alone after his mental health drastically declined. Charlotte visited him in the finale to share the news that their son was expecting a child. The pair shared an emotional moment as George briefly had a breakthrough and recalled the early days of their marriage.

She formed a friendship with Charlotte as the newcomer assimilated to London society. Agatha was also secretly meeting with George’s mother Princess Augusta (Michelle Fairley) to share what she learned from Charlotte about their marriage.
\nLady Danbury ultimately chose to form a real friendship with Charlotte over a beneficial secret alliance with Princess Augusta. Following Lord Danbury’s death, Agatha had a brief affair with Lord Ledger (Keir Charles) but they quickly parted ways. She later declined Adolphus’ (Tunji Kasim) attempts at a courtship because she didn’t want to depend on another man.  
\nPresent: While assisting Queen Charlotte, Lady Danbury (Adjoa Andoh) reflected on her past love life. Agatha’s conversations with Violet (Ruth Gemmell) stirred up memories of her time with Lord Ledger — which Violet later figured out. The duo have an unspoken understanding about Agatha’s secret feelings for Violet’s late father.

Violet formed a friendly connection with Lady Danbury without knowing that her dad was interested in her.
\nPresent: Violet revealed to Lady Danbury that she wanted to try to meet a man years after her late husband’s death. Agatha showed her support which led to Violet connecting the doubts about her friend’s affair with her late father.

Although he was often left in the dark by Reynolds, Brimsley remained committed to Charlotte.  
\nPresent: In the present, Brimsley (Hugh Sachs) advised Charlotte as she played matchmaker for her children. Their professional relationship — and friendship — was a consistent part of Charlotte’s story line. Brimsley’s relationship with Reynolds presumably came to an end as a result of George’s declining health.

\nPresent: As George’s health deteriorates, Charlotte chose to live separately from her husband. This presumably led to Reynolds’ offscreen disappearance in the present. He isn’t discussed and doesn’t make an appearance when Charlotte went to visit George during the finale.

\nPresent: Queen Charlotte’s brother did not make an appearance in the present day timeline.
