Of the 16 fake electors under investigation in Georgia for taking part in a scheme to keep President\u00a0Donald Trump<\/strong>\u00a0in office in 2020, eight have accepted immunity deals from Fulton County District Attorney\u00a0Fani Willis<\/strong>, according to a\u00a0brief<\/a> filed on Friday by the electors\u2019 lawyer,\u00a0Kimberly Debrow.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n In early April, Nathan Wade<\/strong>, a special prosecutor advising the Georgia grand jury appointed to investigate Trump\u2019s election meddling efforts, gave Debrow immunity offers for eight of the ten electors she represented (in total, 16 Republicans took part in the scheme). The two who did not receive offers decided to obtain individual counsel. The filing does not name which of the 16 electors were offered immunity deals.\u00a0<\/p>\n Friday\u2019s filing comes in response to a motion Willis submitted in April seeking to have Debrow disqualified from the case. Prosecutors say that Debrow didn\u2019t inform her clients of an immunity offer last summer, and that some of the electors she represents have\u00a0incriminated each other<\/a> in interviews with prosecutors. Willis called Debrow\u2019s continued representation of the group of electors an \u201cimpracticable and ethical mess.\u201d<\/p>\n Debrow shot back in Friday\u2019s filing, calling the DA\u2019s motion \u201creckless, frivolous, offensive, and completely without merit.\u201d She claimed that the DA only floated \u201chighly generalized, non-individualized \u2018offers to offer\u2019 potential immunity\u201d last summer and that her clients were informed of this possibility. Debrow alleged that the DA\u2019s office \u201cknew\u201d their representation of that summer\u2019s immunity conversations was \u201cfalse\u201d when they filed the April motion. She also maintained that all ten of her current and former clients \u201cremain united in their innocence.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n Willis\u2019s office opened an inquiry into Trump and his allies\u2019 election meddling in February 2021, and in May 2022 convened a special grand jury with the power to subpoena witnesses. In addition to investigating the fake elector scheme, the grand jury also looked into Trump\u2019s\u00a0demand<\/a> that George Secretary of State\u00a0Brad Raffensberger<\/strong> \u201cfind 11,780 votes.\u201d Over seven months of work, the grand jury interviewed 75 people,\u00a0including<\/a> former National Security Advisor\u00a0Michael Flynn<\/strong>, Trump White House Chief of Staff\u00a0Mark Meadows<\/strong>, and Trump lawyer\u00a0Rudy Giuliani<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n In February, portions of the grand jury report were made public. The report recommended more than a dozen people for indictments, though it declined to name any names. However, in an interview with\u00a0The New York Times<\/em>, the grand jury\u2019s forewoman\u00a0strongly hinted<\/a> that Trump was among them. We won\u2019t know for sure until Willis comes out with the charges, after which the full report will be made public. In late April, Willis\u00a0said<\/a> her office is planning on announcing charging decisions \u201cin the near future,\u201d potentially as soon as July.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n The Fulton County DA\u2019s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
