It seems that\u00a0Ed Sheeran<\/strong><\/a> is so happy that his long legal battle is over, he could sing. So he did.\u00a0<\/p>\n On Thursday,\u00a0Sheeran won the copyright infringement suit<\/a> first brought against him in 2018 alleging that Sheeran\u2019s hit song \u201cThinking Out Loud\u201d had ripped off Marvin Gaye\u2019s \u201cLet\u2019s Get It On.\u201d The suit was brought by the family of Gaye\u2019s late co-writer, Ed Townsend, and Townsend\u2019s family asked for\u00a0$100 million in damages<\/a>.<\/p>\n After the verdict was announced in Sheeran\u2019s favor, the\u00a0singer told reporters<\/a> outside the courthouse, \u201cI’m obviously very happy with the outcome of the case. And it looks like I’m not having to retire from my day job after all.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cThese chords are common building blocks which were used to create music long before \u2018Let\u2019s Get It On\u2019 was written and will be used to make music long after we all are gone,\u201d Sheeran said. \u201cThey are in a songwriter’s ‘alphabet,’ our toolkit, and should be there for all of us to use. No one owns them or the way they are played, in the same way that nobody owns the color blue.”<\/p>\n On Friday evening, Sheeran swapped the suit and tie he\u2019d worn in court for more casual attire and celebrated both the win and the release of his latest album,\u00a0Subtract<\/em>, with a mini concert on the street in New York City.\u00a0Subtract<\/em> was officially released Friday, and Sheeran has a pop-up shop, \u201cThe Subtract Experience,\u201d currently open in SoHo.
