{"id":1683,"date":"2022-12-23T19:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-12-23T19:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/entertainment.runfyers.com\/index.php\/2022\/12\/23\/rian-johnson-breaks-down-glass-onions-arrival-scene\/"},"modified":"2022-12-23T19:00:00","modified_gmt":"2022-12-23T19:00:00","slug":"rian-johnson-breaks-down-glass-onions-arrival-scene","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/entertainment.runfyers.com\/index.php\/2022\/12\/23\/rian-johnson-breaks-down-glass-onions-arrival-scene\/","title":{"rendered":"Rian Johnson Breaks Down Glass Onion\u2019s \u201cArrival\u201d Scene"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"has-dropcap\">Lights, camera, action! <em>Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery<\/em> director <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/hollywood\/2022\/12\/poker-face-is-rian-johnsons-modern-take-on-retro-mystery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Rian Johnson<\/strong><\/a> chatted with <em>Vanity Fair<\/em> for the <em>Notes on a Scene<\/em> series where he broke down the \u201carrival\u201d scene which sees <strong>Daniel Craig<\/strong>\u2019s detective Benoit Blanc meet the \u201cdouchey friends\u201d of <strong>Edward Norton<\/strong>\u2019s eccentric billionaire Miles Bron\u2014Birdie Jay (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/hollywood\/2022\/12\/awards-insider-kate-hudson-glass-onion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Kate Hudson<\/strong><\/a>), Lionel Toussaint (<strong>Leslie Odom Jr.<\/strong>), Claire Debella (<strong>Kathryn Hahn<\/strong>), Duke Cody (<strong>Dave Bautista<\/strong>)\u2014at a port before shipping off to Bron\u2019s private island for an all-to-real murder-mystery party.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The first meetup of the starry ensemble was \u201cday one, shot one\u201d for the hit sequel, says Johnson, which premiered in theaters on November 23 for a limited theatrical release and is now available to stream on Netflix. <em>Glass Onion<\/em> is intentionally a far cry from the original <em>Knives Out<\/em> and features a new color palette, \u201cthe blues and yellows of summer in Greece with beautiful swimwear,\u201d says Johnson, rather than the \u201ccozy brown, New England sweaters\u201d of the original.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cWe\u2019re going to have them be totally new deals every single time,\u201d Johnson says of the films in the <em>Knives Out<\/em> franchise. Johnson\u2019s decision to have each film exist in a completely unique universe goes back to the \u201coriginal source of [his] inspiration for all of this,\u201d his love of Agatha Christie. \u201cShe was coming into each one with a totally different conceptual approach. She was trying twists and turns and narrative gambits,\u201d Johnson says. \u201cShe was subverting the tropes of the genre from the very start.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">To create the vibe of the <em>Glass Onion,<\/em> Johnson shared how he worked with costume designer <strong>Jenny Eagan<\/strong> to create looks for the ensemble cast that were \u201cdistinct as characters in a game of Clue, but also looking like somebody that would be walking around in the real world.\u201d As such, Hudson\u2019s former fashion It girl was outfitted in fabulous colors, while Hahn\u2019s politician was in decidedly less glamorous attire.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cPoor Kathryn,\u201d says Johnson with a smile. \u201cKathryn showed up and she\u2019s like, \u2018I\u2019m in a Benoit Blanc mystery and everyone wears fabulous costumes. This is going to be amazing.\u2019 She shows up and she walks past the racks of clothes, and there\u2019s Kate\u2019s rack and it\u2019s glimmering colors, and there\u2019s Daniel\u2019s rack that\u2019s all these fabulous outfits. And then she gets to her rack, and as you can see here my directive to Jenny Eagan was \u2018beige,\u2019\u201d he says. \u201cI just wanted her in sad tans and beige\u2026. I wanted it to be the sad trumpet noise of costumes in this movie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">There was one piece of costuming that really helped with character development: masks. \u201cI wrote this movie in 2020. I wrote it during lockdown, which is probably part of the reason why it takes place on a Greek island,\u201d Johnson said. \u201cFade in Greek island\u2026that\u2019s where I wanted to be.\u201d While Johnson promised that <em>Glass Onion<\/em> isn\u2019t a mask movie, he was compelled by, as he put it, \u201cthe notion of defining people\u2019s personalities based on their choice of maskwear.\u201d As such, Johnson says he put Hahn in a\u2014you guessed it\u2014beige mask; Odom Jr.\u2019s scientist Lionel in \u201ca very proper, N95 mask\u201d; and Craig\u2019s stylish detective in \u201ca dapper mask that\u2019s coordinated to his outfit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Johnson&#8217;s favorite mask\u2014or lack thereof\u2014was Hudson\u2019s Birdie, who\u2019s high-fashion chain-link mask full of holes was particularly funny to Johnson. \u201cI think we all knew some version of this person,\u201d he says. \u201cShe\u2019s like, \u2018I\u2019m trying. I\u2019m masked.
