OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is using his olive oil inefficiently in an \u201coffense to horticulture,\u201d the Financial Times humorously reports.<\/p>\n
For its \u201cLunch with the FT<\/a>\u201d series, the paper joined Altman in his kitchen. He prepared a garlicky pasta and salad, taking a rare break from his demanding job of advocating for the disruption of American copyright law<\/a>.<\/p>\n Altman uses Graza olive oil, which comes in beautifully-branded squeeze bottles that are popular on social media (he is a millennial, after all). But Altman\u2019s preference for over-priced, \u201ctrendy\u201d oil is not the crime \u2014 the crime is that he appears to fundamentally misunderstand Graza\u2019s schtick. The company sells distinctly-marked \u201csizzle\u201d and \u201cdrizzle\u201d varieties of its olive oil for saut\u00e9eing and finishing dishes, respectively.<\/p>\n To be fair, Spanish olive cultivation isn\u2019t exactly common knowledge. But if you are so dedicated to the art of cooking that you stock two types of olive oil on your kitchen counter, you would probably know that one bottle is far pricier than the other because it\u2019s meant to be used as a post-cooking \u201cdrizzle,\u201d not a frying oil.<\/p>\n Altman used the \u201cdrizzle\u201d finishing oil in his saut\u00e9e pan, even though the \u201csizzle\u201d oil was just inches away. It\u2019s like taking fresh basil and cooking it down in a pan as though it\u2019s spinach: it\u2019s a waste of precious earthly material. At that rate, you might as well just throw some dollar bills in the pan\u2026 which is not not <\/em>the playbook of Silicon Valley startups, incidentally.<\/p>\n OpenAI raised a record-setting $40 billion<\/a> in a new funding round this year, yet it continues to bleed money, reportedly losing about $5 billion<\/a> last year. It\u2019s not clear how the company will turn a profit with such monumental costs. OpenAI was at one point losing money<\/a> on its $200-per-month ChatGPT Pro plan.<\/p>\n Altman\u2019s culinary faux pas probably can\u2019t shed much light on OpenAI\u2019s financials.
