Bindi Irwin<\/strong><\/a> missed her late father Steve Irwin<\/strong>\u2019s annual gala in Las Vegas on Saturday, May 10, after suffering a ruptured appendix.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s going to be OK, but surgery \u2014 out of all the things we were ready for, that was not one of them,\u201d Bindi\u2019s brother Robert Irwin<\/strong> told People<\/em><\/a> in an interview published on Saturday. \u201cShe\u2019s just come out the other side of endometriosis and now the appendix goes. Health is so important \u2014 it really is.\u201d<\/p>\n

Robert, 21, confirmed that his sister made the trip out to Las Vegas but then had to undergo an unexpected operation. Bindi and Robert\u2019s mother, Terri Irwin<\/strong><\/a>, also missed the memorial event to help take care of the Crikey! It\u2019s the Irwins<\/em> star.<\/p>\n

\u201c[Bindi] was ready to come to the gala, put on a brave face in a lot of discomfort and a lot of pain and said, \u2018Nope, I\u2019m just going to tough it out, I\u2019m going to go for it,\u2019 \u201d Robert confirmed. \u201cBut the surgeon said, \u2018No, your appendix is going. That thing\u2019s gotta come out.\u2019 Health has to come first. She\u2019s very sad. She\u2019s devastated that she and Mom can\u2019t be here, but I know she\u2019ll make a speedy recovery.\u201d<\/p>\n

Steve \u2014 a wildlife conservationist and beloved television personality \u2014 died at age 44 after being pierced by a stingray barb in September 2006. Bini posed with her mother and brother via Instagram<\/a> on Friday, May 9, and wrote that she was looking forward to \u201craising funds and awareness for Wildlife Warriors\u201d at the Las Vegas event.<\/p>\n

The Steve Irwin Gala has been held annually since 2002 in order to raise money for global conservation efforts. Steve, a famed zookeeper and conservationist, tragically died<\/a> at age 44 in September 2006 from an injury caused by a stingray.<\/p>\n

As Robert mentioned, Bindi, 26, announced in March 2023 that she\u2019d undergone surgery for the uterine condition endometriosis after enduring a decade of \u201cinsurmountable\u201d pain<\/a>. She shared with 9honey Celebrity<\/em> in September 2024 that she\u2019d spent so long \u201cfighting an invisible battle daily\u201d<\/a> before she was finally diagnosed with endometriosis.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt one point in my journey I was told that it was all in my head by a doctor,\u201d she recalled. \u201cI started to truly believe it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bindi \u2014 who shares daughter Grace, born March 2021, with husband Chandler Powell<\/strong> \u2014 credited her mother Terri with giving her the strength to get through a decade of chronic pain.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe was there every step of the way for me, right down to helping me to the bathroom when I could barely walk after surgery,\u201d she recalled. \u201cI don\u2019t know what I would do without my incredible mama \u2026 I hope I am able to be even half the incredible mama to Grace that my mom is to me.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, the larger-than-life Australian wildlife conservationist is still very much a part of his granddaughter\u2019s life: There are photos of him scattered throughout the Australian Zoo, where Grace spends her [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

While Bindi missed Steve\u2019s memorial gala this year, she paid heartfelt tribute<\/a> to her late father on what would have been his 63rd birthday in February.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo the world, you will forever be remembered as the greatest Wildlife Warrior,\u201d Bindi wrote via Instagram. \u201cTo me, you\u2019ll always be the most incredible dad and now our family\u2019s guiding light. I love you and I miss you every day.\u201d<\/p>\n
