I could really see the love in Dina\u2019s eyes earlier in the episode, during Ellie\u2019s performance of \u201cTake On Me.\u201d What were you aiming to convey there?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t want it to be so emotional. I was actually trying to hold back. But it was just a really beautiful moment. That set was stunning, the greenery, the flowers peeking through. And Bella\u2019s voice just being angelic and pure, and also it being a moment of happy grieving. And then, on top of that, Dina is in denial of the situation. I started crying. I think that could be up for interpretation, because I played it various ways, and I don\u2019t actually know which one they chose. But there was a version where I was sad because of Joel, and knowing that the reason I love Joel is because I love Ellie, and the reason I love Ellie is because I love Joel. And then there was another version where maybe it\u2019s just Dina being scared\u2014like, Oh shit, I\u2019m in love with this person. And she knows she\u2019s pregnant by then, so it\u2019s terrifying and complicates everything.<\/p>\n

You mentioned Dina being bisexual, but maybe not even quite knowing what that means. I got a chuckle out of Dina and Ellie not understanding the rainbows. But then I started thinking\u2014these two have grown up entirely in a zombie apocalypse, so they probably don\u2019t know queer culture. Was that something that you thought about in your approach to the character and this relationship?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yeah, absolutely. I think it contributed to her confusion about sexuality and what it could be. They don\u2019t know what pride is, what the LGBTQ community is. Dina doesn\u2019t even know the word bisexual.<\/em> Think about a world without all that. It makes it kind of sad, because you wonder what they\u2019re missing out on\u2014and the preciousness of the inclusion they could feel. And maybe a solution to them feeling like outcasts, where Dina is conforming and Ellie is accepting that she\u2019s not like the other residents of Jackson.<\/p>\n

Ahead of the season, you were quoted as promising that \u201cthe gays are going to be fed.\u201d<\/a> So I have to ask: Is this what we were talking about? Is the feeding complete, or is the feeding just getting started?<\/strong><\/p>\n

[Laughs<\/em>] I feel like this was the appetizer. I can\u2019t believe I said that. I can\u2019t believe I\u2019ve ever been interviewed professionally.<\/p>\n

If this is the appetizer, what\u2019s to come for these lovebirds?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A lot more backstory. And they\u2019re still holding secrets from each other, so now that they\u2019re this much more comfortable, it\u2019ll be fascinating for them to actually reveal their cards and evolve as characters together. And maybe some other characters coming back and complicating things.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s still early, but what\u2019s been the experience so far stepping into this universe and its insanely passionate fan base?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I don\u2019t think I\u2019ve ever seen somebody do a drag show based off of the IP that I was a part of. There\u2019s a whole drag community for The Last of Us;<\/em> it\u2019s got a big gay fan base. And everybody just wants me to get them a \u201chi\u201d from Pedro. \u201cOh, Pedro, he is so hot. Have him say \u2018hi\u2019 to me.\u201d And I\u2019m like, \u201cDude, that\u2019s my coworker, but okay.\u201d<\/p>\n

You\u2019re on a really nice run here, between last summer\u2019s Alien: Romulus,<\/em> The Last of Us,<\/em> and your upcoming debut as Hawkgirl in Superman.<\/em> Have you been able to enjoy it, or are you too busy to do that?<\/strong><\/p>\n

It feels like I\u2019m on a train, and with each project, the train\u2019s going faster. So when the train\u2019s going kind of slow, it\u2019s easier to jump off, but when it goes really fast, you\u2019d probably jump off and die. That was kind of dramatic. But honestly, that\u2019s kind of the way I\u2019m looking at it.<\/p>\n

You just don\u2019t want the train to ever stop.<\/strong><\/p>\n

If it fully stops, that\u2019s really bad whiplash.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
