Let\u2019s get to it!<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Well? <\/strong>During Apple\u2019s earnings call yesterday, Tim Cook revealed that the company paid <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/05\/01\/apple-ceo-tim-cook-says-tariffs-to-add-900m-in-costs-in-q3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$900 million in tariffs<\/a> last quarter. But despite this, the CEO <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/05\/01\/despite-paying-900m-in-tariffs-apples-tim-cook-isnt-announcing-price-increases-yet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">didn\u2019t announce any price increases<\/a> \u2014 yet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Big bucks: <\/strong>Defense tech startup Mach Industries, which was founded by 21-year-old Ethan Thornton, <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/05\/01\/rising-star-defense-tech-startup-mach-industries-is-raising-100-million-sources-say\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">is about to close a fresh $100 million in financing<\/a>, sources told TechCrunch. This new funding should bring the startup\u2019s total funding to about $185 million to date.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>More models: <\/strong>Alibaba announced this week that <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/04\/28\/alibaba-unveils-qwen-3-a-family-of-hybrid-ai-reasoning-models\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">it\u2019s releasing a family of AI models<\/a>, called Qwen3, that it claims can outperform OpenAI and Google. This was in response to a legal complaint filed by New Delhi-based M Moser Design Associates, which alleged that its employees had received emails containing obscene and vulgar content sent via Proton Mail.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Cheaters never win: <\/strong>Cluely went viral recently for its bold claim of helping people cheat on everything. But some startups are claiming <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/04\/29\/startups-launch-products-to-catch-people-using-ai-cheating-app-cluely\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">they can catch Cluely\u2019s users<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Alexa+: <\/strong>Amazon\u2019s new digital assistant aims to let users talk with it in a more natural style and eventually have agentic abilities that allow it to use third-party apps on a user\u2019s behalf. During Amazon\u2019s earnings call this week, CEO Andy Jassy says that <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/05\/01\/amazon-ceo-says-100000-users-now-have-alexa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">100,000 users now have Alexa+<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>AI where it matters: <\/strong>Airbnb seems to be taking a more measured approach with AI. It started <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/05\/02\/airbnb-is-quietly-rolling-out-an-ai-customer-service-bot-in-the-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rolling out an AI-powered customer service<\/a> bot in the U.S. last month. CEO Brian Chesky said in February that the company would use AI for customer service before it started implementing it for other uses like travel planning or booking tickets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Epic ruling: <\/strong>Epic Games has <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/04\/30\/epic-games-just-scored-a-major-win-against-apple\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">notched a win<\/a> in an ongoing legal dispute with Apple. Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers said in a ruling that Apple was in \u201cwillful violation\u201d of a 2021 injunction that prohibited the company from imposing anticompetitive pricing. As a result, Fortnite could be back on iPhones as soon as next week.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>LOL: <\/strong>Following the Epic Games ruling, Stripe shared documentation that shows iOS developers <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/05\/01\/stripe-shows-ios-developers-how-to-avoid-apples-app-store-commission\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">how to avoid the Apple commission<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Check your settings: <\/strong>Meta emailed Ray-Ban Meta owners on Tuesday with a notice that AI features will now be <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/04\/30\/if-you-own-ray-ban-meta-glasses-you-should-double-check-your-privacy-settings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">enabled on the glasses by default<\/a>. This means Meta\u2019s AI will analyze photos and videos taken with the glasses while certain AI features are switched on.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Yikes! <\/strong>OpenAI said it was <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/04\/29\/openai-rolls-back-update-that-made-chatgpt-too-sycophant-y\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201crolling back\u201d<\/a> the latest update to the default AI model powering ChatGPT, GPT-4o, after complaints about strange behavior, in particular it being overly agreeable and validating.
