The setting is Mr. Chow, the swank Chinese restaurant that <strong>Michael Chow<\/strong> opened on 57th Street in 1979\u2014two years after nearby Studio 54, and four years before Karl Lagerfeld\u2019s debut collection for Chanel. As for the guests, trickling in from the Upper East Side, they are the definition of glamour itself. Hairstylist <strong>Sam McKnight,<\/strong> in town from London, has just teased <strong>Kate Moss<\/strong>\u2019s blonde lengths. <strong>Erykah Badu<\/strong>\u2019s sublime energy is still radiating through <strong>Jawara,<\/strong> who styled hair for the musician and her daughter, <strong>Puma Curry.<\/strong> <strong>Angela Levin,<\/strong> responsible for <strong>Nicole Kidman<\/strong>\u2019s makeup, watched the actress slip effortlessly into the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/style\/2023\/05\/story-behind-nicole-kidman-met-gala-2023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">same dress<\/a> she wore for her 2004 Chanel No. 5 campaign. The two talents behind Gisele\u2019s bombshell look\u2014<strong>David von Cannon<\/strong> on hair, <strong>Georgi Sandev<\/strong> on that incandescent face\u2014are here too, along with a sizable contingent of the beauty industry\u2019s top tier. It\u2019s rare to have a quorum in this business, when beauty teams usually consist of a single makeup artist and hairstylist, like two oppositely charged ends of a battery. By contrast, the crowd at Mr. Chow feels like a cross-generational yearbook come to life. \u201cIt\u2019s the greatest people ever\u2014past, present, and future, everybody in one room,\u201d says <strong>Sarah Brown,<\/strong> executive director of Violet Grey\u2019s Violet Lab, who brought the beauty platform onboard as a co-sponsor in 2022. Augustinus Bader, the industry\u2019s skin care darling, is supporting this year\u2019s dinner as well. \u201cWhat I love about the evening is these are real working people,\u201d says Brown, a former <em>Vogue<\/em> beauty director with a deep appreciation for behind-the-scenes legends. Makeup artist <strong>Sam Visser<\/strong> (who looked after Balenciaga\u2019s <strong>Demna<\/strong>) and <strong>Rao\u00fal Alejandre<\/strong> (behind <strong>Nicola Peltz Beckham<\/strong>\u2019s crisp cat eye) catch up on the upstairs balcony.
