{"id":165547,"date":"2025-05-01T10:00:33","date_gmt":"2025-05-01T10:00:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/entertainment.runfyers.com\/index.php\/2025\/05\/01\/american-airlines-adds-7-new-routes-from-chicagos-ohare-the-points-guy\/"},"modified":"2025-05-01T10:00:33","modified_gmt":"2025-05-01T10:00:33","slug":"american-airlines-adds-7-new-routes-from-chicagos-ohare-the-points-guy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/entertainment.runfyers.com\/index.php\/2025\/05\/01\/american-airlines-adds-7-new-routes-from-chicagos-ohare-the-points-guy\/","title":{"rendered":"American Airlines adds 7 new routes from Chicago&#8217;s O&#8217;Hare &#8211; The Points Guy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>American Airlines is growing fast in Chicago.<\/p>\n<p>Next winter, the Fort Worth, Texas-based carrier will add seven new routes and increase flights on another 10 from Chicago&#8217;s O&#8217;Hare International Airport (ORD).<\/p>\n<p>The move is seemingly the latest escalation in a renewed battle with United Airlines for the upper hand in the Windy City.<\/p>\n<p>American&#8217;s new routes from O&#8217;Hare are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Akron-Canton Airport (CAK) in Ohio \u2014 twice daily starting Oct. 6<\/li>\n<li>Cura\u00e7ao International Airport (CUR) \u2014 Saturdays, beginning Dec. 6<\/li>\n<li>Guatemala City&#8217;s La Aurora International Airport (GUA) \u2014 three weekly flights starting Nov. 6<\/li>\n<li>Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport (ROA) in Virginia \u2014 daily, starting Aug. 6<\/li>\n<li>Juan Santamar\u00eda International Airport (SJO) in San Jose, Costa Rica \u2014 daily, starting Nov. 2 (last flown in 2022)<\/li>\n<li>St. Croix&#8217;s Henry E. Rohlsen Airport (STX) \u2014 Saturdays, beginning Dec. 6<\/li>\n<li>St. Maarten&#8217;s Princess Juliana International Airport (SMX) \u2014 Saturdays, starting Nov. 8<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Tickets for the new routes go on sale on May 5.<\/p>\n<p>These new destinations for American out of Chicago \u2014 along with additional frequencies on 10 more routes \u2014 come as American and United face off in a renewed battle for Chicago.<\/p>\n<p>American was slow to rebuild its O&#8217;Hare hub following the coronavirus pandemic, instead focusing on its bases in the Sun Belt, including Charlotte-Douglas International Airport (CLT) and Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW).<\/p>\n<p>In 2024, American operated nearly 26% fewer flights and 21% fewer seats from O&#8217;Hare than it did in 2019, schedule data from aviation analytics firm Cirium shows. The airline operated 19% fewer flights but seats were roughly flat in 2024 compared to 2019, according to Cirium \u2014 meaning, it flew its routes, by and large, with larger aircraft.<\/p>\n<p>More recently, United has gone as far as to <a href=\"https:\/\/thepointsguy.com\/news\/united-american-airlines-chicago-ohare-fight\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">advertise around the city<\/a> that it is &#8220;Chicago&#8217;s #1 Airline,&#8221; Ben Humphrey, vice president of O&#8217;Hare operations at American, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>American&#8217;s seats at O&#8217;Hare will increase 21% this June, July and August compared to last year, per Cirium This includes a <a href=\"https:\/\/thepointsguy.com\/news\/american-airlines-new-italy-routes-summer-2025\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">new nonstop to Naples International Airport (NAP)<\/a> in Italy that begins May 6.<\/p>\n<p>Of the seven new routes coming this winter, American will compete with United on five: Akron, Guatemala City, Roanoke, San Jose and St. Maarten, Cirium schedules show.<\/p>\n<p>American will be the only airline offering nonstops between Chicago and both Curacao and St. Croix.<\/p>\n<p>The 10 existing routes where American will add additional flights include O&#8217;Hare to Aruba&#8217;s Queen Beatrix International Airport (AUA), Cancun International Airport (CUN), Los Cabos International Airport (SJD) and Puerto Vallarta International Airport (PVR).
