UPDATE \u2014 4\/26\/25, 2:42 p.m. ET:<\/strong> The Cleveland Browns confirmed via X<\/a> that they had selected quarterback Shedeur Sanders<\/strong> as the 144th overall pick in the fifth round on Saturday, April 26. This makes Sanderst the sixth quarterback taken in the 2025 draft.<\/p>\n

After months of build-up and anticipation, Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders<\/strong><\/a>\u2019 draft night ended with a thud.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Sanders, whose draft projections had varied wildly heading into the start of the NFL Draft on Thursday, April 24, was not selected in the first round.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The reigning Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year and the son of NFL Hall of Famer and University of Colorado coach, Deion Sanders<\/strong><\/a>, many expected Shedeur, 23, to hear his name called in Green Bay, Wisconsin on Thursday night.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Alas, Shedeur was forced to wait to potentially find out his NFL fate when the second round of the Draft begins on Friday, April 25.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The former Dallas Cowboys star has not been shy about hyping up Shedeur, as evidenced by a May 2024 post via X<\/a> that resurfaced after his son\u2019s draft fall on Thursday.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In a response to a fan critical of Shedeur\u2019s play, Deion responded, \u201cHe will be a top 5 pick. Where yo son going ? Lololol I got time today. Lololol.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

After the conclusion of Round 1, Shedeur posted a video<\/a> from his family\u2019s home in Texas where he and his supporters watched the Draft instead of attending in person.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe all didn\u2019t expect this, of course,\u201d Sanders said. \u201cBut I feel like with God, anything\u2019s possible \u2014 everything\u2019s possible.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He continued, \u201cI don\u2019t feel like this happened for no reason. All this is of course fuel to the fire. Under no circumstance \u2014 we all know this shouldn\u2019t have happened. Who Got Picked Ahead of Shedeur Sanders?<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n

Heading into the night, there were three teams that made the most sense as a landing spot for Shedeur: the Cleveland Browns, Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Giants.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Browns ended up trading down to No. 5 and selected University of Michigan defensive tackle Mason Graham<\/strong>. Cleveland traded with the Jacksonville Jaguars, who took Shedeur\u2019s Colorado teammate and Heisman Trophy winner, Travis Hunter<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

College sports\u2019 most famous\u00a0names arrived in style for the biggest night of their careers as they waited to see if and when they\u2019d be drafted into the National Football League for the 2025-2026 season. Before [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Steelers also neglected to select a quarterback, instead drafting University of Oregon defensive tackle Derrick Harmon<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the Giants traded back in the first round, swapping picks with the Houstons Texans. At No. 25, New York drafted Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What Are Analysts Saying About Shedeur Sanders?<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n

ESPN\u2019s Stephen A. Smith<\/strong> called out \u201cthe media\u201d for contributing to Shedeur\u2019s surprising Draft slide.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe anonymous stuff that was being thrown out there. What do they say about Shedeur Sanders?\u201d Smith, 57, said Friday on First Take<\/i>. \u201cAll of a sudden, he shows up at the Scouting Combine and he doesn\u2019t work out. All of the meetings, it was the arrogance and all of the stuff. I\u2019m saying forget all of that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Smith argued the \u201cbiggest issue\u201d with Shedeur was the idea of teams \u201chaving to deal\u201d with his father, Deion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIn this particular instance because he was being coached by his Dad, folks weren\u2019t confident they were getting the right, accurate information about him,\u201d Smith said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

First Take<\/i> cohost Marcus Spears<\/strong> pushed back against Smith, saying, \u201cPeople want to create this conversation like it had something to do with his attitude or had something to do with [Deion].\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI have not heard anyone on this network say that Shedeur Sanders is not a good quarterback,\u201d Spears, 42, added. \u201cBut we got to stop with this narrative like the things that were said about him caused him to not get taken in the first round and he had this immediate immense elite talent that these other guys had.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
