NFL Hall of Fame Shannon Sharpe<\/strong><\/a> has been accused of rape and sexual battery in a bombshell $50 million lawsuit<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In court documents filed in Nevada on April 20, according to NBC Sports<\/em><\/a>, a woman identified as \u201cJane Doe\u201d accused Sharpe of sexually assaulting her on multiple occasions as well as making verbal threats. Sharpe strongly denied those allegations, calling the lawsuit a \u201cshakedown\u201d on behalf of Jane Doe\u2019s attorney, Tony Buzbee<\/strong>. The athlete later outed Jane Doe\u2019s supposed identity in a video statement.<\/p>\n

Sharpe\u2019s attorneys have acknowledged he previously attempted to settle Jane Doe\u2019s claim with a payment of \u201cat least $10 million,\u201d but she turned down his offer of meditation.<\/p>\n

The Lawsuit<\/h3>\n

In a $50 million lawsuit filed in Nevada on April 20, Sharpe was accused of committing assault, sexual assault, battery and sexual battery against the unidentified woman.<\/p>\n

In court docs obtained by NBC Sports<\/em><\/a>, Jane Doe alleged that she met Sharpe at a Los Angeles gym when she was 20 years old and he was in his mid-50s. In her lawsuit, Jane Doe recalled that her first encounter with Sharpe involved the athlete offering to \u201cbuy her fake t**s\u201d if she won a weight-loss competition.<\/p>\n

According to Jane Doe, the pair had \u201ca rocky consensual relationship\u201d over two years, though she alleges that Sharpe inflicted intentional emotional distress. Among a litany of allegations, Jane Doe accused Sharpe of sometimes recording their sexual activity without her consent and then showing the footage to others.<\/p>\n

The woman additionally accused Sharpe of becoming more controlling during their final months together, including once allegedly telling her, \u201cI will f***ing kill you,\u201d when he noticed she was trying to share her location with friends out of concern.<\/p>\n

Her court documents mention that Jane Doe tried to allegedly pull away from Sharpe after he unintentionally live-streamed himself having sex<\/a> with another woman on Instagram in September 2024.<\/p>\n

Sharpe is alleged to have confronted Jane Doe after she started ignoring his calls, leading to an incident of forcible sex without her consent in October 2024. The woman reported in her court filing that Sharpe allegedly raped her again in January 2025 without wearing a condom.<\/p>\n

Her 13-page complaint states: \u201cA woman can say \u2018yes\u2019 to consensual sexual relations with a man 99 times, but when she says \u2018no\u2019 even once, that \u2018no\u2019 means no. Defendant Shannon Sharpe, a man who is accustomed to getting what he wants, completely fails to understand this basic concept.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter many months of manipulating and controlling Plaintiff \u2014 a woman more than thirty years younger than he \u2014 and repeatedly threatening to brutally choke and violently slap her, Sharpe refused to accept the answer no and raped Plaintiff, despite her sobbing and repeated screams of \u2018no.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Shannon Sharpe\u2019s Response<\/h3>\n

Sharpe\u2019s attorney, Lanny J. Davis<\/strong>, told Us Weekly<\/em> on Monday, April 21, that Jane Doe\u2019s lawsuit is \u201cfilled with lies, distortions, and misrepresentations \u2014 and it will not succeed.\u201d He accused the woman of attempting \u201ca blatant and cynical attempt to shake down Mr. Sharpe for millions of dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n

Through his attorneys, Sharpe denied all of the lawsuit\u2019s accusations \u2014 including \u201cthe gross lie of \u2018rape.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe stands firmly by the truth and is prepared to fight these false claims vigorously in court,\u201d Davis said in a statement. \u201cHe looks forward to vindication through due process and a judgment based on the facts and the law.\u201d<\/p>\n

Davis released text messages between Jane Doe and Sharpe which he said prove \u201cthis was a consensual relationship that included roleplaying, sexual language and fantasy scenarios.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tLawyer Tony Buzbee is claiming Jay-Z is \u201charassing\u201d his family after filing a civil lawsuit that accused the rapper of raping a 13-year-old girl in 2000. \u201cThe New York Times contacted me to ask for my response to rapper Jay-Z\u2019s allegation that I tried to extort and blackmail him,\u201d Buzbee said in a statement via [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Sharpe subsequently released his own video statement on Tuesday, April 22, in which he dismissed Jane Doe\u2019s lawsuit as \u201ca shakedown.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m going to be open, transparent and defend myself because this isn\u2019t right,\u201d he said via Instagram.<\/p>\n

Sharpe blamed Jane Doe\u2019s lawyer, Buzbee, for orchestrating the lawsuit as an attack on \u201cBlack men,\u201d after his previous involvement in suits against Jay-Z and Diddy<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI believe he\u2019s going to release a 30-second clip of a sex tape that tries to make me look guilty and play into every stereotype you could possibly imagine,\u201d he said. \u201cThat video should actually be ten minutes or so. Hey, Tony, instead of releasing your edit, put the whole video out. I don\u2019t have it, or I would myself. You know what happened and you\u2019re trying to manipulate the media.\u201d<\/p>\n

In his controversial video statement, Sharpe outed Jane Doe\u2019s name and accused her of \u201ca deliberate setup.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat they\u2019re getting [now] is sued for defamation and trying to take me down,\u201d Sharpe threatened. \u201cMy career is all about real talk and honesty. I know my family and fans know exactly what this is about, and I\u2019m going to be out there telling you whatever I need to say, just like I always do. I love all you guys.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to NBC Sports<\/em><\/a>, Davis later confirmed in a news conference that Sharpe planned to pursue a \u201ccounterclaim\u201d against the woman. The attorney also acknowledged<\/a> that Sharpe previously offered \u201cat least $10 million\u201d to settle the matter before Jane Doe filed her suit, but she turned down the offer.<\/p>\n

Buzbee responded via Instagram<\/a> on Tuesday by insisting that Sharpe had \u201cbreached\u201d a confidentiality agreement that he\u2019d required the woman to sign when they briefly entered into a mediation process.<\/p>\n

\u201cOn the one hand Mr. Sharpe and his lawyers claim that the case filed by Jane Doe is meritless, yet on the other hand they now have disclosed that Mr. Sharpe offered Jane Doe $10 million in writing not to file her lawsuit. That is a true statement,\u201d Buzbee wrote via Instagram. \u201cJane Doe was in fact offered $10 million to settle but rejected that offer, choosing instead to proceed with litigation. Sharpe\u2019s team is now trying to discredit and dox her. Sharpe and his team are now, as anticipated, also attacking me. We are not going to be deterred by these tactics.\u201d<\/p>\n

The woman\u2019s legal team subsequently released audio<\/a>\u00a0on Wednesday, April 23, from a purported phone call between the accuser and Sharpe, in which Sharpe allegedly threatened to \u201cchoke [her] in public.\u201d Sharpe\u2019s representatives have questioned the authenticity of all recordings released by Jane Doe\u2019s lawyers.<\/p>\n

Sharpe\u2019s ESPN First Take<\/em> cohost, Stephen A Smith<\/strong>, addressed the \u201cShannon Sharpe situation\u201d during his \u201cStephen A. Smith Show\u201d<\/a> podcast on Tuesday, calling the lawsuit \u201ca sad situation.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve grown close as friends. I certainly root for him. I know he\u2019s been through a lot in life, he\u2019s overcome a lot of things, and when he departed from Fox, I was more than happy to bring him on board here,\u201d he said. \u201cSo all I can speak to is what I know based on the reports, and I can speak about ESPN and Disney.\u201d<\/p>\n

Smith said that he was \u201chopeful and prayerful that [Sharpe is] completely innocent,\u201d reiterating that his friend and colleague has denied all allegations.<\/p>\n

\u201cOn one hand, going on the offensive to defend himself, I completely understand where Shannon Sharpe is coming from,\u201d he said. \u201cOn the other hand, when his legal team issued out the press release on X yesterday, they mentioned her name and revealed some of those explicit text messages That was uncomfortable, and I don\u2019t know if that\u2019s a strategy that would work.\u201d<\/p>\n

Smith went on, \u201cOne of the hardest things in the world for all of us to do is to just lay low and be quiet and let our legal team do it. And we don\u2019t always know if that\u2019s the right thing to do. I know, and I can tell you all I spoke to Shannon, not in details, but I spoke to him, and he emphatically proclaims his innocence. According to Mr. Buzbee, his client emphatically proclaims his guilt. So where does that leave us? I\u2019d love to tell you I know the answer to that question, but I don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n

UPDATE \u2014 4\/25\/25, 3:30 p.m. ET:: <\/b>In the days after the lawsuit was filed, other allegations about Sharpe\u2019s prior conduct have come to light.<\/p>\n

Accused of Choking Female Coworker During Time at FS1<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n

Years before the $50 million sexual assault and rape lawsuit, Sharpe was reportedly accused of misconduct with a coworker<\/a> during his time as a cohost on FS1\u2019s Undisputed<\/i>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Sharpe allegedly choked a female production assistant when he worked on the show, according to a Thursday, April 24, report by Front Office Sports. The outlet claimed that they spoke with \u201ctwo sources with knowledge of the incident.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

One individual alleged Sharpe reached an undisclosed settlement with the unnamed accuser. A lawsuit was not filed at the time.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThere was no incident of choking involving Shannon on the FS1 set,\u201d a spokesperson for Sharpe told Us Weekly<\/i> on Thursday, April 24. \u201cOn one occasion, he and a few colleagues were involved in some light physical interaction in a playful context. Fox Sports later chose to resolve the matter privately.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Woman Accused Sharpe of Sexual Assault in Defamation Lawsuit<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n

A woman named Michele Evans, who claims to have been in a relationship with Sharpe for nearly a decade, filed a lawsuit against Sharpe in 2023, claiming he sexually assaulted her in 2010.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe Defendant proceeded to forcefully subdue me, compelling me to my knees and subsequently engaging in non-consensual oral penetration,\u201d reads the complaint, which was obtained by People<\/i><\/a>. \u201cDespite my protests, he persisted in this violation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

While Evans is not suing Sharpe for sexual assault, she said the aftermath of the incident was \u201crife with defamatory commentary, assailing my professional reputation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
