Penn Badgley<\/strong> had to walk back his \u201cno sex scenes\u201d rule for the final season of You<\/em> <\/a>after talking to the creative team for the popular Netflix<\/a> series, and fans are curious about the reasoning behind his decision.<\/p>\n \u201cI had to throw that out the window,\u201d Penn told People<\/em><\/a> in an interview published on April 24, 2025.<\/p>\n Warning: Spoilers for You season 5 ahead!<\/em><\/p>\n Penn told the publication that he had to ask himself what he \u201cwas willing\u201d to do when it came to steamy scenes with his on-screen love interest in You season 5.<\/p>\n \u201cThat was the question again. All right, what am I willing to do?\u201d the former Gossip Girl<\/em><\/a> star explained. \u201cAnd as I always said, I said, my desire is that least as possible, but if it\u2019s necessary, that\u2019s the show we all sign up to make. So, let\u2019s make sure it\u2019s vital, let\u2019s make sure it\u2019s important, it\u2019s deliberate. And we did.\u201d<\/p>\n Penn has played the charming yet murderous star of You<\/em> for five seasons, but the actor said, despite the character\u2019s creepy personality, he\u2019ll \u201cmiss\u201d diving into the role.<\/p>\n \u201cHe\u2019s been a profound experience for me. He\u2019s not a real person. So what have I been doing? I\u2019ve been engaging in this \u2026 my entire 30s,\u201d Penn shared. \u201cI was 30 when I took the role. I\u2019m going to be 39 this year. Even though the show, the way it came out, it\u2019s actually been closer to seven years. For me, it\u2019s like my 30s.\u201d<\/p>\n The Easy A<\/em> star continued, \u201cI became a father while I was on this show. I only got married just before I took the role. So, I\u2019ve grown a lot and I\u2019ve grown with Joe in a strange way. He\u2019s taught me a lot about what it is to be a man by knowing what it is not. And I don\u2019t mean the obvious things like, \u2018oh, don\u2019t murder, that\u2019s bad.\u2019 That\u2019s very clear.\u201d<\/p>\n Joe\u2019s been getting away with murder (literally) for five seasons now, and while some people might not be satisfied with his ending, Penn was happy with Joe\u2019s fate.<\/p>\n In the series finale, Joe was finally apprehended for the murders of Love Quinn<\/a> (Victoria Pedretti<\/strong>) and Guinevere Beck (Elizabeth Lail<\/strong>), and as a little extra salt in the wound, Bronte (Madeline Brewer<\/strong>) shot him in the groin just before his arrest.<\/p>\n \u201cThe finale, to me, it\u2019s doing everything that could possibly be done in a satisfying manner,\u201d Penn said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly<\/em><\/a> published on April 24, 2025. \u201cI think he\u2019s delivered to his truly appropriate end. And then the only thing left is to realize [that] there is no ending that could satisfy anyone 100 percent, because justice for a man like Joe isn\u2019t in and of itself satisfying. I mean, he\u2019s an abuser. He\u2019s a killer. He\u2019s a bad person. So I think being satisfied is a positive thing.\u201d<\/p>\n Even though Joe begged Bronte to kill him before he was arrested, she opted to take out his manhood instead, something Penn found particularly poetic.<\/p>\n \u201cHe does his worst damage not in the cage, because in the cage he\u2019s actually transparent about who he is, or he\u2019s the most transparent about who he is,\u201d he told the outlet. \u201cAnd he\u2019ll actually put anybody in the cage who needs to be \u2014 men, women, old, young, whatever \u2014 but he will not bring just anybody into the bedroom.
