The Conners<\/em> series finale used archive footage of most main Roseanne<\/em><\/a> cast members \u2014 except Roseanne Barr<\/strong><\/a> \u2014 to get viewers extra emotional about the show\u2019s conclusion.<\/p>\n

During the final episode, which aired Wednesday, April 23, the last scenes went back and forth between Dan (John Goodman<\/strong>), Jackie (Laurie Metcalf<\/strong>), Darlene (Sara Gilbert<\/strong>) and Becky (Lecy Goranson<\/strong>) saying goodbye to each other for the night and clips of them throughout the years on Roseanne<\/em>.<\/a><\/p>\n

There were sweet moments between Dan and his daughters, Jackie and Dan and sisters Darlene and Becky. The noticeable absence? The late Conners matriarch, played by Barr. Despite the final season mentioning Barr\u2019s character in every single episode, the ABC spinoff opted out of including any actual footage of Barr\u2019s titular character. (Michael Fishman<\/strong>, who played D.J. but left after four seasons, was also not featured.)<\/p>\n

Roseanne<\/em> originally aired on ABC<\/a> from 1988 to 1997. After being briefly revived in 2018 \u2014 and after Barr\u2019s eventual exit from the series amid controversial social media posts \u2014 the story transformed into The Conners<\/em>. \u201cI just can\u2019t bear it, so I don\u2019t [watch],\u201d Barr, 72, told the Los Angeles Times<\/em> in February 2023. \u201cWhen they killed my character off, that was a message to me, knowing that I\u2019m mentally ill or have mental health issues, that they did want me to commit suicide.\u201d<\/p>\n

She continued: \u201cThey killed my character. \u2026 And all of that was to say thank you for bringing 28 million viewers, which they never had before and will never see again. Because they can kiss my ass.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite Barr\u2019s onscreen absence, the final season centered around Dan<\/a> trying to find justice by suing the pharmaceutical company that caused Roseanne\u2019s death from an opioid addiction.<\/p>\n

Multiple cast members weighed in on how the sixth and final season of The Conners<\/em> prioritized paying tribute to characters no longer featured on the show.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a really interesting thing. [The idea of] when to bring her up, how it has been through the series is when it seems right,\u201d Goranson, 50, shared in March. \u201cThere\u2019s touches of it without really landing on it and making it super heavy.\u201d<\/p>\n
