The system, which requires the driver to keep their hands on the wheel, is not yet capable of autonomously driving. Thousands of Tesla owners already drive themselves around with supervised FSD. Tesla\u2019s announcement Wednesday centers on the addition of a  \u201cRobotaxi\u201d app that will theoretically be used by non-Tesla owners to hail a vehicle in the fleet.   <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">FSD Supervised ride-hailing service is live for an early set of employees in Austin &amp; San Francisco Bay Area.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve completed over 1.5k trips &amp; 15k miles of driving.<\/p>\n<p>This service helps us develop &amp; validate FSD networks, the mobile app, vehicle allocation, mission control &amp;\u2026 <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/pYVfhi935W\" target=\"_blank\">pic.twitter.com\/pYVfhi935W<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Tesla AI (@Tesla_AI) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Tesla_AI\/status\/1915080322862944336?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\">April 23, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ferrying employees before a launch is standard procedure in the world of autonomous ride-hail. For example, Waymo uses a similar playbook when it enters a new market. In the lead up to a commercial launch and after weeks of driverless testing, Waymo will open its service to employees before inviting certain members of the public.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tesla plans to launch a robotaxi service in Austin in June, which the company reiterated Tuesday during its <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/04\/22\/tesla-profits-drop-71-on-weak-sales-and-anti-elon-musk-sentiment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">first-quarter earnings<\/a> call. The automaker didn\u2019t share many other details on the call, like when it expects start charging for rides. The most color CEO Elon Musk provided was to say that he expects to roll out <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/storyline\/tesla-q1-earnings-live-updates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">10 to 20 vehicles<\/a> on \u201cday one\u201d of service in Austin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And while Tesla made a splash last year after it debuted its <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2024\/10\/10\/tesla-reveals-20-cybercabs-at-we-robot-event\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cybercab concep<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2024\/10\/10\/tesla-reveals-20-cybercabs-at-we-robot-event\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">t<\/a> \u2014 a futuristic-looking robotaxi built without a steering wheel or pedals \u2014 the company is poised to begin operations with its existing portfolio of vehicles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The promotional video Tesla shared Wednesday shows a Model 3 sedan that has been fitted with a screen in the back for passengers that displays information such as estimated time of arrival, climate and music controls, and a button for an emergency stop. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A disclaimer at the bottom of the video reads: \u201cSafety driver is present to supervise and only intervene as necessary. FSD (Supervised) does not make the vehicle autonomous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In January, Musk said there would be <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/01\/29\/elon-musk-claims-tesla-will-launch-a-self-driving-service-in-austin-in-june\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">no drivers in the cars<\/a> for Tesla\u2019s Austin launch, which will rely on the yet-to-be-released \u201cunsupervised\u201d version of FSD. He also said at the time that Tesla would deploy the unsupervised FSD software to Tesla owners in California and other markets this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s not clear if Tesla still plans to launch a fully autonomous service in Austin from Day One, or whether Tesla will take a more measured approach by keeping a safety driver in the front seat for safety reasons. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In California, autonomous vehicle companies need a range of permits to operate.
