In the final year of his life, Missouri State football player Todric McGee<\/strong> spent precious time caring for his beloved mother, Stephanie.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

McGee died on Saturday, April 19<\/a>, after sustaining injuries at his Springfield, Missouri home. According to authorities, McGee died from a \u201cpossible accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound.\u201d He was 21.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Nearly a year ago, McGee\u2019s mother, Stephanie Pope<\/strong>, suffered a brain aneurysm which required surgery and months of rehab, according to the Springfield News-Leader<\/i><\/a>. McGee helped his mother organize a GoFundMe to assist in covering the family\u2019s medical costs, which raised nearly $5,000.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHe was a 20-, 21-year-old kid who saw his mom in a different light,\u201d Steve Martin<\/strong>, McGee\u2019s head football coach at Wichita Northwest High School, said in a News-Leader<\/i> story published on Monday, April 21. \u201cTo see him be selfless and come back and want to be around mom and help her out pays tribute to the type of home he grew up in. They were tight-knit. Todric didn\u2019t lose any of that, and he just gained more appreciation for all the things Steph did for him.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Days after the death of her son, Pope gave insight into McGee\u2019s mental state before his sudden and untimely death.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHe wasn\u2019t depressed, there\u2019s no mental issues or anything like that that would make this happen,,\u201d she told KYTV-TV Springfield<\/a> in a story published on Monday. \u201cIt\u2019s just a tragic accident, and I just want people to know that, you know, he\u2019s a good kid.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Thalia Pope<\/strong>, McGee\u2019s older sister who played basketball at the University of Houston and the University of Texas at Arlington, recalled how her brother would bring the family together during tough times.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHe was always there, and he was just everything,\u201d she told KYTV. \u201cHe was a sibling I needed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

McGee\u2019s former high school teammate, Zaire Adkins<\/strong>, remembered how close he was with his mother \u2014 and how that extended to his friend group.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
