Kaitlyn Dever<\/strong><\/a> is speaking out about what was going on in her personal life in the weeks leading up to filming that very intense Abby scene with Pedro Pascal<\/strong><\/a>\u2018s Joel in The Last of Us<\/em><\/strong> season two.<\/p>\n If you don\u2019t know, in the April 20 episode of the HBO hit, Abby beat Joel to near-death before stabbing him in the neck<\/a>, to avenge the death of her father.<\/p>\n Kaitlyn <\/strong>previously revealed that her beloved mom passed away after a lengthy battle with breast cancer<\/a> in February 2024. Her mom\u2019s funeral fell just three days before filming the Joel death scene.<\/p>\n Keep reading to find out more\u2026<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n Kaitlyn<\/strong> explained to EW<\/a>, \u201cIt was just a massive scene emotionally, and with blocking, too. There were so many moving parts and so many things to navigate.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI lost my mom two or three weeks before I actually shot this scene [on The Last of Us]. and my mom\u2019s funeral was three days before I did my first day. So I was sort of in a fog. I was in a daze.\u201d <\/p>\n How she got through it? \u201cTo be as honest as possible. I will just say that my days leading up to this scene were horrible.\u201d<\/p>\n She continued, \u201cBecause of my life circumstances, I wasn\u2019t actually able to do my normal routine as an actor, which was really interesting because I was kind of worried about it. Usually if I have a monologue like that, I\u2019m memorizing it three weeks before I do it. I had a different approach, and I think that it really served the character in a lot of ways. I was able to sort of\u2026 I don\u2019t know, just really let it go and not think about it too much because the words on the page are so powerful anyway.\u201d<\/p>\n Showrunner Craig Mazin<\/strong> spoke of it as well, telling THR<\/a>, \u201cThe tragedy was that Kaitlyn lost her mom very shortly before the start of shooting. And it was very upsetting. And Mark and I were just like, \u201cHow are we going to do this to her?\u201d Because when she came back, that was the next sequence and the nature of our schedule was such that we couldn\u2019t really move pieces around. Pedro <\/strong>had other obligations. Isabela <\/strong>was working on [James Gunn<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s upcoming] Superman<\/em>. So we were stuck. I spoke with Kaitlyn <\/strong>and she was like, \u201cIt\u2019s okay, it\u2019s okay, I\u2019ll be fine, I won\u2019t be fine, but\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n Craig<\/strong> continued, \u201cSo I have to say the professionalism and dedication that Kaitlyn showed was, honestly, I don\u2019t know how she did it. I would never say anything so vulgar as to say she was using these emotions that she had. This is different. But she showed up and went right into it and did it. There\u2019s this moment \u2014 and I don\u2019t know how this happens \u2014 when Kaitlyn is looking at Joel. She turns her head, sees the golf clubs across the room, turns back to him, and a tear just drips out of her eye. \u2018How did you time this?\u2019 But they\u2019re in the moment, they\u2019re feeling something, and that\u2019s a choice in that moment. And just the way Mark kept them all safe and connected to create what I think is the most upsetting \u2026 well, I take it back. There\u2019s another moment in this season. It\u2019s more upsetting.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
