The true star of Friday\u2019s season 17 finale of RuPaul\u2019s Drag Race<\/a><\/em> wasn\u2019t its winning queen or its host, RuPaul Charles<\/strong><\/a>. Instead, it was Liza Minnelli<\/strong> who stole the show, taking a seat in a massive, onstage throne for a pre-crowning bit of banter with RuPaul.<\/p>\n

Minnelli, the 79-year-old stage and screen icon and daughter of Judy Garland<\/a> and director Vincente Minnelli<\/a>, was awarded the show\u2019s third-ever \u201cGiving Us Lifetime Achievement Award.\u201d Previous recipients include Cassandra Peterson<\/strong> (better known, perhaps, as Elvira<\/a>, Mistress of the Dark) and designer Bob Mackie<\/strong><\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Revealed to the crowd as her 1972 version of \u201cRing Them Bells\u201d<\/a> played, a Halston-clad Minnelli reclined on her throne as the audience stood, clapped, and chanted \u201cLiza.\u201d \u201cLook at you!\u201d she said to RuPaul, admiring the host\u2019s tulle-laden look. \u201cI know. It only took six hours,\u201d replied the 64-year-old RuPaul.<\/p>\n

\u201cSeven for me,\u201d Liza Minnelli shot back. \u201cI\u2019m older than you.\u201d<\/p>\n

RuPaul, a noted appreciator of old Hollywood lore<\/a>, asked Minnelli about her childhood on the MGM lot. \u201cEverybody would rush to see whatever my mother was doing, and my father, especially, because he was making people do magic,\u201d Minnelli said. \u201cOh, he was the best.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Drag Race host also asked about a 1980s-era newspaper photo of Minnelli \u201cholding a guitar to go record with the Pet Shop Boys \u2026 why were you holding a guitar?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause they told me to hold it,\u201d Minnelli responded. \u201cWhat would you do?\u201d she asked the chuckling crowd. \u201cI\u2019m a director\u2019s daughter!\u201d<\/p>\n

Speaking with Variety<\/em><\/a>, Drag Race<\/em> producer Tom Campbell<\/strong> says that Minnelli\u2019s appearance on the finale came straight from Ru, herself. \u201cShe seemed un-gettable, like that\u2019s too much to ask for,\u201d Campbell said, but the competition show lucked out. \u201cHer management were also big fans of Drag Race<\/em>, and they know what we\u2019ve done, and they know the heart of the show, and they\u2019re invested as viewers.\u201d<\/p>\n
