The WGA is attempting to secure higher wages and better working conditions from the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) \u2014 a group representing around 350 major studios and streaming services like Netflix, Disney, Amazon, Apple, and Sony \u2014 for the thousands of movie and television writers the union represents. Picket lines are expected to form starting Tuesday afternoon.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple\">The last <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/entertainment-screenwriters-strike-cost-idCAN0628755420080606\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WGA strike in 2007 and 2008<\/a> lasted 100 days and was credited with tipping California into a recession, causing a loss of around $2.1 billion to the state\u2019s economy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple\">Shows like <em>Saturday Night Live<\/em> and <em>The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon<\/em> will be the first affected and are expected to immediately stop production. Other TV shows like scripted dramas or soap operas are also expected to be impacted, either cutting production short (and thereby reducing the number of episodes per season) or halting entirely. Movies could also be affected depending on how long the strikes go on for, though studios, networks, and producers have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/business\/story\/2023-02-23\/ahead-of-a-possible-strike-studios-and-writers-get-ready-in-case-of-a-summer-shutdown\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stockpiling scripts and boosting international productions<\/a> in preparation for this outcome.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple\">The WGA is trying to secure a new three-year contract for its 11,500 members, arguing that the shift to streaming has made it difficult for writers to make a living. There are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/culture\/23696617\/writers-strike-wga-2023-explained-residuals-streaming-ai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a lot of complex reasons<\/a> for this, but the biggest issues boil down to TV shows on streaming services having shorter seasons, residual payments being lower than those for broadcast TV, and the rise of \u201cmini rooms\u201d \u2014 small groups that quickly produce scripts \u2014 that make writers more disposable.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wgacontract2023.org\/updates\/bulletins\/writers-are-not-keeping-up\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report published<\/a> by the union on March 14th found that half of TV series writers are currently being paid the basic minimum rate, up from 33 percent between 2013-2014. \u201cThe companies have used the transition to streaming to cut writer pay and separate writing from production, worsening working conditions for series writers at all levels,\u201d said the WGA, adding that more writers are \u201cworking at minimum regardless of experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple\">The union\u2019s demands include increasing minimum wage rates and residuals payments, addressing the \u201cabuses of mini-rooms,\u201d and increased contributions to the union\u2019s health and pension plan. The WGA also wants safeguards to regulate the use of artificial intelligence in scriptwriting, preventing it from being used to generate content or rewrite work already contracted by human writers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple\">The AMPTP <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/oliverdarcy\/status\/1653232335645470722?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">provided a statement<\/a> claiming it had offered \u201cgenerous increases in compensation\u201d that included an improvement in streaming residuals and had been willing to \u201cimprove that offer.\u201d It was unwilling to compromise on the union\u2019s demands for \u201cmandatory staffing\u201d and \u201cduration of employment\u201d however, saying these \u201cprimary sticking points\u201d would require companies to staff shows with writers even if they\u2019re not needed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple\">\u201cThe companies\u2019 behavior has created a gig economy inside a union workforce, and their immovable stance in this negotiation has betrayed a commitment to further devaluing the profession of writing,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wga.org\/news-events\/news\/press\/writers-guild-of-america-calls-strike-effective-tuesday-may-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said the WGA West on Monday<\/a>. \u201cFrom their refusal to guarantee any level of weekly employment in episodic television, to the creation of a \u2018day rate\u2019 in comedy variety, to their stonewalling on free work for screenwriters and on AI for all writers, they have closed the door on their labor force and opened the door to writing as an entirely freelance profession. The last full-fledged contract negotiations took place in 2017, reaching <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2017\/biz\/news\/wga-amptp-deal-contract-strike-threat-1202406221\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a tentative agreement<\/a> minutes after the previous contract expiration deadline had passed. The covid pandemic then made it difficult for both sides to negotiate terms for the following three-year contract agreement <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2020\/biz\/news\/wga-amptp-negotiations-deal-contract-1234695529\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in 2020<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple\">Today\u2019s strike may only be the start of Hollywood\u2019s woes as contracts at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sagaftra.org\/sag-aftra-member-update-regarding-wgaamptp-negotiations-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Screen Actors Guild American Federation of Television and Radio Artists<\/a> (SAG-AFTRA) and the <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2023\/biz\/news\/dga-no-strike-clause-wga-1235590063\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Directors Guild of America<\/a> (DGA) are set to expire on June 30th.
