{"id":161887,"date":"2025-04-13T15:12:01","date_gmt":"2025-04-13T15:12:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/entertainment.runfyers.com\/index.php\/2025\/04\/13\/jack-dorsey-and-elon-musk-would-like-to-delete-all-ip-law-techcrunch\/"},"modified":"2025-04-13T15:12:01","modified_gmt":"2025-04-13T15:12:01","slug":"jack-dorsey-and-elon-musk-would-like-to-delete-all-ip-law-techcrunch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/entertainment.runfyers.com\/index.php\/2025\/04\/13\/jack-dorsey-and-elon-musk-would-like-to-delete-all-ip-law-techcrunch\/","title":{"rendered":"Jack Dorsey and Elon Musk would like to \u2018delete all IP law\u2019 | TechCrunch"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p id=\"speakable-summary\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jack Dorsey, co-founder of Twitter (now X) and Square (now Block), sparked a weekend\u2019s worth of debate around intellectual property, patents, and copyright, with <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/jack\/status\/1910829254214115681?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1910829254214115681%7Ctwgr%5E6f3c0d5cda07c7487ae96afd1b01bd17a0cd3010%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fcryptobriefing.com%2Fip-law-controversy-dorsey-musk%2F\" target=\"_blank\">a characteristically terse post<\/a> declaring, \u201cdelete all IP law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">X\u2019s current owner Elon Musk quickly replied, \u201cI agree.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s not clear what exactly brought these comments on, but they come at a time when AI companies including OpenAI (which Musk co-founded, competes with, and is <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/03\/09\/musk-may-still-have-a-chance-to-thwart-openais-for-profit-conversion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">challenging in court<\/a>) are facing <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2024\/11\/22\/openai-accidentally-deleted-potential-evidence-in-ny-times-copyright-lawsuit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">numerous<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/04\/11\/law-professors-side-with-authors-battling-meta-in-ai-copyright-case\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lawsuits<\/a> alleging that they\u2019ve violated copyright to train their models.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Indeed, tech evangelist and investor Chris Messina alluded to this while <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/chrismessina.me\/post\/3lmnvldjwdk2f\" target=\"_blank\">writing<\/a> that Dorsey \u201chas a point,\u201d because, \u201cAutomated IP fines\/3-strike rules for AI infringement may become the substitute for putting poor people in jail for cannabis possession.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Others were less sympathetic to this argument, with Ed Newton-Rex (whose nonprofit Fairly Trained certifies AI training practices that respect creators\u2019 rights) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/ednewtonrex.bsky.social\/post\/3lmmv4x7gps2a\" target=\"_blank\">describing the Dorsey-Musk exchange<\/a> as \u201cTech execs declaring all-out war on creators who don\u2019t want their life\u2019s work pillaged for profit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the writer Lincoln Michel <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/thelincoln.bsky.social\/post\/3lmp5zsgidc2z\" target=\"_blank\">wrote that<\/a> \u201cnone of Jack or Elon\u2019s companies would exist without IP law,\u201d adding, \u201cThey just hate artists.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dorsey elaborated on his stance in subsequent replies, <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/jack\/status\/1910988424376713388\" target=\"_blank\">writing<\/a> that there are \u201cmuch greater models to pay creators\u201d while claiming \u201cthe current ones take way too much from them and only rent-seek.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He made a similar point when attorney (and former Robert F. Kennedy Jr. running mate) Nicole Shanahan <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NicoleShanahan\/status\/1911162493021618585\" target=\"_blank\">pushed back<\/a> with an all caps \u201cNO.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIP law is the only thing separating human creations from AI creations,\u201d Shanahan said. \u201cIf you want to reform it, let\u2019s talk!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dorsey <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/jack\/status\/1911172569241411985\" target=\"_blank\">countered<\/a>, \u201ccreativity is what currently separates us, and the current system is limiting that, and putting the payments disbursement into the hands of gatekeepers who aren\u2019t paying out fairly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Musk\u2019s reply is at least consistent with statements he\u2019s made in the past, for example <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/09\/21\/why-elon-musk-says-patents-are-for-the-weak.html\" target=\"_blank\">telling Jay Leno<\/a> that \u201cpatents are for the weak.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A decade ago, in a so-called \u201cpatent giveaway,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2014\/06\/13\/the-one-asterisk-on-teslas-patent-giveaway\/\" target=\"_blank\">he pledged<\/a> that Tesla would not enforce patents against other companies that used them \u201cin good faith.\u201d (The company subsequently <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/legal\/tesla-sues-australias-cap-xx-over-ev-battery-technology-2023-07-17\/\" target=\"_blank\">sued Australia\u2019s Cap-XX<\/a> over patents, but it said that was a response to a lawsuit Cap-XX filed against a Tesla subsidiary.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And Dorsey, of course, initiated the open social media project that eventually became Bluesky, though he seemed to become disillusioned and <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2024\/05\/05\/jack-dorsey-says-hes-no-longer-on-the-bluesky-board\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">eventually left Bluesky\u2019s board<\/a>.
