The actor, best known for his roles in \u2018Top Gun\u2019, \u2018The Doors\u2019, and \u2018Batman Forever\u2019, died aged 65 on 1 April in Los Angeles from pneumonia after a long battle with throat cancer that left him needing a voice box and feeding tube.<\/p>\n
People magazine has now published a cover story on his life, recalling his past interviews and including tributes from his closest friends and colleagues.<\/p>\n
Val\u2019s long-time collaborator David Zucker was featured in the special edition of the publication and recalled the actor\u2019s audition for \u2018Top Secret!\u2019<\/p>\n
He said: \u201cHe did an Elvis impersonation that was incredible.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nDavid, who last saw Val about a year ago, added: \u201cI don\u2019t see that he ever changed. He was always eccentric.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nWriter Kevin Jarre remembered a moment on the set of \u2018Tombstone\u2019 as part of the tribute \u2013remembering how Val silently grabbed a locust from a crew member and ate it.<\/p>\n
\nThe People edition also highlighted how in his memoir Val opened up about his upbringing, calling his mother Gladys \u201cas enigmatic to me as Ingrid Bergman\u201d. <\/p>\n
\nHe also used the book to speak of his regret at his single-minded dedication to love over career.<\/p>\n
\nVal wrote: \u201cI wish I\u2019d been as dedicated to my career as I was to women.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nThough he never received an Oscar nomination, Val added in the tome: \u201cI would like to have more Oscars than anybody. Meryl Streep must feel pretty good, you know?\u2026 it\u2019s about being loved.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nPeople also printed old interviews with Val, including one in 2021 when he admitted: \u201cSometimes I feel so low and I have the blues really, really hard.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nBorn in Los Angeles, Val was the middle of three son \u2013 and his life was shaped by tragedy, with his younger brother Wesley, whom he called \u201cthe genius\u201d, drowning in a jacuzzi aged 16.<\/p>\n
\nVal, who was raised Christian Scientist, never fully recovered from the loss, adding in his 2020 memoir \u2018I\u2019m Your Huckleberry\u2019: \u201cI want my brother alive. Physically not just spiritually.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nVal was the youngest person accepted into the Juilliard school\u2019s drama division, and after early successes in \u2018Top Secret!\u2019 and \u2018Real Genius\u2019, he shot to fame as Iceman in \u2018Top Gun\u2019 in 1986.<\/p>\n
