Lizzo was left in a ‘state of depression’ over lawsuits<\/p>\n
The 36-year-old rapper – whose real name is Melissa Viviane Jefferson – admitted as she gears up to launch her new album that she went through a phase of believing that she is “hated” by the world after a string of lawsuits were launched against her. <\/p>\n
Speaking on the ‘On Purpose’ podcast, she told host Jay Shetty: “I knew I was going to have to do my biggest [album].<\/p>\n
\u201cI had this feeling that everybody hates me for something that isn\u2019t true. But at the end of the day, because of the position I\u2019m in, everybody hates me.<\/p>\n
“I\u2019ve been in a state of depression because I didn\u2019t know how to fix it. I was dark and I was scared of people. I was like, you can\u2019t trust anyone, you can\u2019t love anyone, I don\u2019t want to talk to nobody.”<\/p>\n
\nThe ‘About Damn Time’ hitmaker – whose new record ‘Love in Real Life’ will be released later this year – added that she has had to go to some “dark” places on the upcoming album.<\/p>\n
\nShe said: “I have some songs that are very dark.”<\/p>\n
\nLizzo was hit with multiple suits in 2023, with several of her former background dancers alleging that the singer subjected them to sexual harassment.<\/p>\n
\nShe recently opened up about the impact they had on her mental health to fans during a performance at the Wiltern Theater, with the singer caught on camera by a concertgoer giving her update.<\/p>\n
\nIn footage shared by a fan on X, she said the lawsuits left her so \u201cdeeply hurt\u201d she \u201cdidn\u2019t want to live anymore\u201d.<\/p>\n
\nShe added: \u201cI named (my album \u2018Love in Real Life\u2019) because about a year and a half ago \u2013 it\u2019s so hard for me to talk about \u2013 I was in such a dark, deep depression.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cI was so heartbroken by the world and so deeply hurt that I didn\u2019t want to live anymore, and I was so deeply afraid of people that I didn\u2019t want to be seen. \u201cEventually, I got over that fear.”<\/p>\n
\nThe singer said she shared her story in the hope of reaching anyone dealing with \u201cdepression, or darkness, or felt so betrayed by someone they trusted or was lied on and hated on for those lies\u201d.<\/p>\n
\nLizzo denied the dancers\u2019 claims against her \u2013 calling them \u201coutrageous\u201d and \u201cunbelievable\u201d.<\/p>\n
\nAfter the initial legal filings, six more dancers came forward with similar allegations \u2013 and in September, Asha Daniels, a former stylist for Lizzo\u2019s \u2018Big Grrrl Big Tour\u2019, filed another lawsuit alleging racial and sexual harassment.<\/p>\n
\nIn December 2024, it was reported that Asha\u2019s lawsuit had been dropped.<\/p>\n
