The Grammy-winning singer-songwriter, 61, said she chooses to buy physical copies of albums for the benefit of fellow performers.<\/p>\n
She revealed in a rare interview with The New York Times: \u201cI only buy music in physical form. Artists get paid when you actually buy a CD or the vinyl. That\u2019s important to me.\u201d<\/p>\n
Tracy, whose breakout hit \u2018Fast Car\u2019 became a timeless classic, also added: \u201cI don\u2019t listen to as much (music) as I used to. <\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a physical commitment of going out into the world and finding things.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nBut she insisted she continues to seek out new music, including tracks from contemporary artists such as Charli XCX and Chappell Roan. <\/p>\n
\nTracy added: \u201cIt\u2019s not music that I would make, but I appreciate that we\u2019re in this moment where there\u2019s a path for artists like that, and they can even have success.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nTracy\u2019s comments come as she celebrates the 35th anniversary of her 1988 debut album with a vinyl reissue. <\/p>\n
\nIn the interview, the singer also reflected on her songwriting process, explaining she is still writing \u201cstory songs\u201d. <\/p>\n
\nShe added while she has been labelled a protest singer, she doesn\u2019t fully accept the label.<\/p>\n
\nTracy went on: \u201cI\u2019ve been lucky in that I get to make a living by pursuing a creative endeavour and letting my mind go where it wants.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nThe singer also reflected on the characters in her tunes, specifically those in \u2018Fast Car\u2019, clarifying the song was fictional. <\/p>\n
\nShe said about its lyrics: \u201cI was not, at 24, married with a couple kids \u2013 not that there\u2019s anything wrong with that \u2013 but this is a work of fiction in that regard.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nTracy also recently made a rare public appearance at the 2024 Grammys, where she performed \u2018Fast Car\u2019 alongside Luke Combs. <\/p>\n
\nBut Tracy, who last toured in 2009, said she has no immediate plans to return to the stage. <\/p>\n
\nShe added: \u201cIf I were to tour, I would tour for something new, new material. <\/p>\n
\n\u201cBut that would be the thing that would be most interesting to me at this point.\u201d<\/p>\n
