War is over \u2014 music legends Madonna<\/strong><\/a> and Elton John<\/strong><\/a> have ended their long-standing beef.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe Finally Buried the Hatchet!!!\u201d Madonna, 66, wrote via Instagram<\/a> on Monday, April 7, alongside a photo of herself posing with John, 78, backstage at Saturday Night Live<\/em>. \u201cI went to see @eltonjohn perform on SNL this weekend!! WOW.\u201d<\/p>\n

John was the musical guest on Saturday Night Live<\/em>\u2019s Saturday, April 5, show alongside Brandi Carlile<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI remembered when I was in high school \u2014 I snuck out of the house one night to see Elton perform live in Detroit! It was an unforgettable performance that helped me understand the transformative power of music,\u201d Madonna continued. \u201cSeeing him perform when I was in high school changed the course of my life. I had always felt like an outsider growing up and watching him on stage helped me to understand that it was OK to be different-to stand out- to take the road, less traveled by. In fact, it was essential.\u201d<\/p>\n

John and Madonna have been at odds for decades, with the root of their discord stemming from a 2002 comment John made about Madonna\u2019s Die Another Day<\/em> theme song, which he called \u201cthe worst [James] Bond tune ever.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt hasn\u2019t got a tune,\u201d he told the U.K.\u2019s Sky News<\/a> at the time. \u201cJames Bond themes are usually very camp and this one\u2019s different. \u2026 They should have gone for somebody like Lulu<\/strong> and Shirley Bassey<\/strong>, or maybe I\u2019m in that league?\u201d He added, \u201cI don\u2019t think it\u2019s the best Madonna record and I\u2019m a big fan.\u201d<\/p>\n

Two years later, the \u201cRocket Man\u201d singer threw even more shade<\/a> at the Queen of Pop at the 2004 Q Awards, where John was honored with the Q Classic Songwriting Award. In his acceptance speech, he questioned Madonna\u2019s nomination for best live act.<\/p>\n

\u201cSince when has lip-synching been live?\u201d John said of Madonna. \u201cSorry about that, but I think everyone who lip-synchs on stage in public when you pay, like, 75 quid to see them should be shot. Thank you very much. That\u2019s me off her f***ing Christmas card list, but do I give a toss? No.\u201d
What followed was a years-long back-and-forth between the two artists in the media \u2014 until today.<\/p>\n

\u201cOver the decades it hurt me to know that someone I admired so much shared his dislike of me publicly as an artist. I didn\u2019t understand it,\u201d Madonna wrote in her heartfelt caption on Monday. \u201cI was told Elton John was the musical guest on SNL<\/em> and I decided to go. I needed to go backstage and confront him. When I met him, the first thing out of his mouth was, \u2018Forgive Me\u2019 and the wall between us fell down.\u201d<\/p>\n

John himself chimed in to thank Madonna for her forgiveness.<\/p>\n

\u201cThank you for coming to see me at SNL<\/em>. And thank you for forgiving me and my big mouth,\u201d he wrote in the comments section. \u201cI\u2019m not proud of what I said. Particularly when I think about all the groundbreaking work you have done as an artist \u2013 paving the way for an entire generation of female artists to succeed and be true to themselves. You were also one of the very first people to rise up against HIV\/AIDS in the 80\u2019s, bringing love and compassion to so many who desperately needed it.\u201d<\/p>\n
