There were\u00a0<strong>Wolf Blitzer<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Chris Wallace<\/strong>. And there were the climate protesters,\u00a0<a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/charlottetklein\/status\/1652699713563504640\" class=\"external-link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/twitter.com\/charlottetklein\/status\/1652699713563504640&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/charlottetklein\/status\/1652699713563504640\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">staging a sit-in<\/a> in front of the Bloody Mary station. Metro police were trying to talk them into leaving, and eventually they got up, waving goodbye as they chanted something about oil. Meanwhile,\u00a0<strong>Tiesto<\/strong> was preparing for a live DJ set. CNN CEO\u00a0<strong>Chris Licht<\/strong>\u00a0donned a Tiesto hat for the occasion.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It was a fitting way to wind down the White House Correspondents\u2019 Dinner weekend, which is a mix of the serious and the frivolous, ranging from talk of grave matters to simply letting loose. Over the weekend, journalists championed the 1st Amendment, gave out awards and scholarships, and spoke out on behalf of missing and imprisoned colleagues. The press,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/biden-attacks-news-outlets-lies-conspiracy-malice-2023-04-30\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>\u00a0<strong>Joe Biden<\/strong>\u00a0on Saturday night, is a pillar \u201cof a free society, not the enemy.\u201d The president, as is customary, also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/arts-entertainment\/2023\/04\/29\/biden-jokes-white-house-correspondents-dinner\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cracked jokes<\/a> in his dinner speech, with targets such as Fox News,\u00a0<strong>Ron DeSantis<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Elon Musk<\/strong>. The weekend also saw no shortage of selfies and media gossip\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/news\/2023\/04\/tucker-carlson-fox-news-fired\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/news\/2023\/04\/inside-cnns-defenestration-of-don-lemon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ousters<\/a> of\u00a0<strong>Tucker Carlson<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Don Lemon<\/strong> among the hot topics\u2014and jockeying to get into the top soirees. \u201cI have friends at NBC and they can\u2019t even get into the NBC afterparty,\u201d I overheard one party guest say during a whirlwind three days in the Washington media circus, which, yes, included a stop at the NBC event.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Whether the White House Correspondents\u2019 Dinner is over,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/lifestyle\/2023\/04\/28\/golden-age-white-house-correspondents-dinner-yes-there-was-one\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">was better during previous administrations<\/a>, or is at its core problematic\u2014due to the chummy interactions between journalists and government officials\u2014has been hashed out many times before. There seemed to be more parties than ever this past weekend, a tradition reemerging from both the Trump-era doldrums and the pandemic, which was still wreaking havoc on the festivities just last year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Leaving past debates aside, what I was most interested in this weekend was taking the pulse of the press corps amid a flurry of outlets\u2019 closures or cutbacks, and as the media girds for a likely rematch between President Biden and former President\u00a0<strong>Donald Trump<\/strong>, who was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/lifestyle\/style\/i-sat-next-to-donald-trump-at-the-infamous-2011-white-house-correspondents-dinner\/2016\/04\/27\/5cf46b74-0bea-11e6-8ab8-9ad050f76d7d_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">famously roasted<\/a> at this very dinner before his political rise.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"AssetEmbedWrapper-iJUDRx jzCma asset-embed\">\n<div class=\"AssetEmbedAssetContainer-fmVyIF fAvqua asset-embed__asset-container\"><span class=\"SpanWrapper-kFvfwm ezrazJ responsive-asset AssetEmbedResponsiveAsset-fBMxW gbuarq asset-embed__responsive-asset\"><picture class=\"ResponsiveImagePicture-jJVAmS laQysq AssetEmbedResponsiveAsset-fBMxW gbuarq asset-embed__responsive-asset responsive-image\"><noscript><\/noscript><\/picture><\/span><\/div>\n<p><span class=\"BaseWrap-sc-SJwXJ BaseText-fEohGt CaptionText-cPRdAa deUlYF iCJbOn DkJeI caption__text\">L-R: California Gov. The party for the liberal media company co-founded by former Obama staffers\u00a0<strong>Jon Lovett<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Jon Favreau<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Tommy Vietor<\/strong> was packed with a mix of journalists, Hill staffers, and Friends of the Pod, sipping Pimm\u2019s cups and white wine. In fact, it was so crowded that I heard a Dauphine\u2019s employee telling people that the event was at capacity, and that they had to wait for some people to leave before reentering. This did not go over well with\u00a0<strong>Susan Rice<\/strong>, the president\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/white-house\/susan-rice-step-bidens-domestic-policy-chief-rcna80654\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">outgoing<\/a> top domestic policy adviser, who, when politely turned away, politely replied, \u201cNo.\u201d It wasn\u2019t long before someone came and got Rice, and then explained to the guy who was working the door, \u201cWe\u2019ve got some VIPs.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cThere\u2019s capacity, and then there\u2019s DC capacity,\u201d Lovett told me, half joking.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Among those who\u2019d made it inside were MSNBC\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Mehdi Hasan<\/strong>, who was earning praise for his\u00a0<strong>Matt Taibbi<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/msnbc-host-mehdi-hasan-makes-matt-taibbi-squirm-over-his-twitter-files-errors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">interview<\/a>; the\u00a0<em>New York Times<\/em>\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Astead Herndon<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Sheryl Gay Stolberg<\/strong> (the\u00a0<em>Times<\/em> may have pulled its journalists out of the dinner years ago, but no one said anything about the parties!); comedian\u00a0<strong>Billy Eichner<\/strong>; and White House press secretary\u00a0<strong>Karine Jean-Pierre<\/strong>, who was posing for a photo with her former colleague from the Biden press shop,\u00a0<strong>Jen Psaki<\/strong>, and the Crooked Media guys. I\u2019d found Psaki earlier, clad in a sparkly blue gown, catching up with fellow Obama alum and\u00a0<em>Pod Save America<\/em> co-host\u00a0<strong>Dan Pfeiffer<\/strong>. How was she feeling about a Biden-Trump rematch? \u201cI think people underestimate Trump\u2014even though he\u2019s at\u00a0<a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/majority-americans-trump-illegal-poll\/story?id=98430435\" class=\"external-link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/majority-americans-trump-illegal-poll\/story?id=98430435&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/majority-americans-trump-illegal-poll\/story?id=98430435\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">25 percent approval<\/a> and has been indicted once and impeached twice, he still has a base of support,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s ultimately going to come down to how they make people feel, and we\u2019re not gonna know what that looks like for, like, a year.\u201d Does she prefer Trump or DeSantis as an opponent for Biden? \u201cIf we\u2019re looking at the DeSantis of today, Desantis. Because he doesn\u2019t have a strategy.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Next I arrived at the Semafor party at co-founder\u00a0<strong>Justin Smith<\/strong>\u2019s house in Kalorama, the ritzy neighborhood that\u2019s home to various embassies and power players. (The Obamas live across the street.) I walked in to find Semafor\u2019s other co-founder,\u00a0<strong>Ben Smith<\/strong>, chatting with Americans for Tax Reform president\u00a0<strong>Grover Norquist<\/strong> and recalling when the conservative activist used to be a favorite source for DC journos. Speaking of, Smith called over an economics reporter to make an introduction.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">In the living room, where the music was blasting, I immediately spotted Axel Springer CEO\u00a0<strong>Mathias D\u00f6pfner<\/strong>\u2014at six-foot-seven, you really can\u2019t miss him\u2014and Politico CEO\u00a0<strong>Goli Sheikholeslami<\/strong>, standing with The Information\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Jessica Lessin<\/strong>. People struggled to hear each other over the music and there was no liquor, as one reporter complained to me, but everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves, snacking on Michelin-star-chef\u2013prepared bites and trading their favorite theories as to why Fox News axed Carlson. \u201cThis party is swarming with media reporters,\u201d the\u00a0<em>Washington Post<\/em>\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Josh Dawsey<\/strong> told me in passing as he made his way to the bar.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Politico columnist\u00a0<strong>Michael Schaffer<\/strong> walked in with <em>The Atlantic<\/em>\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Mark Leibovich<\/strong>. How did it feel to be partying while the media burns? \u201cThat\u2019s basically the tension we live with every year,\u201d Leibovich told me. \u201cThe question of what exactly we\u2019re celebrating on this weekend has never sufficiently been answered, and yet, here we are.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">By 9:30 the party had started to empty out, with people heading either to the Axios\/Live Nation event or to the UTA party.
