Around the same time, Zuckerberg added Dana White, a longtime Trump ally and CEO of UFC, to Meta\u2019s board.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe recent elections also feel like a cultural tipping point towards once again prioritizing speech,\u201d Zuckerberg said in a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/about.fb.com\/news\/2025\/01\/meta-more-speech-fewer-mistakes\/\" target=\"_blank\">video<\/a> announcing the moderation changes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet some of the speech that Zuckerberg is so intent on prioritizing comes at the expense of marginalized people. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe do allow allegations of mental illness or abnormality when based on gender or sexual orientation, given political and religious discourse about transgenderism and homosexuality,\u201d Meta\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/transparency.meta.com\/policies\/community-standards\/hateful-conduct\/\" target=\"_blank\">hateful conduct policy<\/a> reads.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meta is modeling its new fact-checking efforts after Community Notes at Elon Musk\u2019s X, which put the onus of moderation in part on other users rather than paid professionals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn place of fact checks, the first Community Notes will start appearing gradually across Facebook, Threads &amp; Instagram, with no penalties attached,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/joel_kaplan\/status\/1908204701457236472?s=46\" target=\"_blank\">Kaplan<\/a> wrote on X.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While this community-based approach to content moderation can sometimes provide important context to misleading or controversial posts, it functions better in tandem with other content moderation tools, which Meta is eliminating.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meta\u2019s greatest currency is its users\u2019 attention, and less content moderation means that there are more posts for people to see \u2014 plus, Meta\u2019s news feed tends to surface content that generates a strong reaction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Already, as Meta began rolling back its fact-checking programs, <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/02\/24\/as-meta-gets-rid-of-fact-checkers-misinformation-is-going-viral\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">false content<\/a> has begun to spread. One Facebook page manager, who spread the viral, fake claim that ICE will pay people $750 to tip them off about undocumented immigrants, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.propublica.org\/article\/facebook-meta-abandons-fact-checking-boosts-viral-content\" target=\"_blank\">told ProPublica<\/a> that the end of the fact-checking program is \u201cgreat information.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re getting rid of a number of restrictions on topics like immigration, gender identity and gender that are the subject of frequent political discourse and debate,\u201d Kaplan <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/about.fb.com\/news\/2025\/01\/meta-more-speech-fewer-mistakes\/\" target=\"_blank\">wrote<\/a> in January. \u201cIt\u2019s not right that things can be said on TV or the floor of Congress, but not on our platforms.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/04\/04\/meta-officially-says-goodbye-to-its-us-fact-checkers-on-monday\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Meta will no longer have any fact-checkers in the U.S. come Monday, according to Chief Global Affairs Officer Joel Kaplan.
