Matty\u2019s secret being discovered is only the beginning as Matlock<\/em> plans to keep the surprises coming.<\/p>\n

During the Thursday, April 3 episode, Sarah (Leah Lewis<\/strong>) is worried that Olympia (Skye P. Marshall<\/strong>) is planning to leave Jacobson Moore after she got help from a fellow attorney on the Johnson file. Sarah tried to get Matty (Kathy Bates<\/strong>) to find out more, to no avail. But the truth ultimately came out<\/a> when Matty made the journey back home \u2014 only to run into Olympia.<\/p>\n

The run-in revealed that Olympia was onto Matty\u2019s lies for a while, which calls into question their friendship and Matty\u2019s future at the firm. Luckily, Us Weekly<\/em> caught up with showrunnerr Jennie Snyder Urman<\/strong> at PaleyFest to get a hint at what comes next.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen we get to a new problem in storytelling, I really sit in the character\u2019s emotion on how they would respond. I\u2019m always surprised with what comes out as I think about it \u2014 like how they push through \u2014 or how each character tells me how they would react,\u201d Urman, 49, told Us about dealing with onscreen challenges. \u201cThe more we dig into the human experience \u2014 and just the more interesting and surprising ways that people behave \u2014 it keeps coming to the forefront.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tMatlock threw viewers for a loop with that shocking premiere plot twist \u2014 but what comes next? Kathy Bates\u2018 character, Madeline \u201cMatty\u201d Matlock, was introduced during the sneak peek of the series, which aired on Sunday, September 22. Despite sharing the same last name as the iconic Matlock series from the \u201980s, Matty appeared to [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

She continued: \u201cI\u2019m constantly surprised by the characters and what the writers\u2019 room brings in. Also just how we can keep twisting the story and make it more. [It is all about] keeping it fresh and interesting.\u201d<\/p>\n

It doesn\u2019t stop there after Matlock<\/em> was renewed for a second season.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cThe season 1 finale sets up everything. In season 2, you\u2019ll get the answers that we\u2019ve been promising,\u201d Urman hinted. \u201cIt sets up something new. You\u2019ll end up with great conflict between characters and a lot of different motivations come to a head. It leaves a lot of drama and fun to unpack in the second season.\u201d<\/p>\n

Matlock<\/em>, which premiered in September 2024, follows a wealthy retired lawyer named Madeline Kingston (Bates) who pretends to be a poor widower named Matty Matlock to get a job at a firm. As it turns out, Matty thinks someone at the company is complicit in the opioid epidemic that resulted in her daughter\u2019s death.<\/p>\n

The plan to take down Jacobson Moore doesn\u2019t exactly go as planned since Matty finds herself growing closer to Olympia (Marshall), Billy (David Del Rio<\/strong>), Sarah (Lewis) and more of her coworkers that don\u2019t seem to be aware of the corruption at the firm.<\/p>\n

After Matlock was renewed, director and executive producer Kat Coiro<\/strong> previewed how the show<\/a> keeps building off the original twist.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s so brilliant about the show and Jennie\u2019s writing is that it\u2019s very incremental and character-based. The twists have a lot to do with psychology rather than relying on big external factors or plot shifts,\u201d Coiro explained in November 2024. \u201cYou get so invested in these characters that small revelations become really exciting.\u201d<\/p>\n

Coiro clarified that the CBS series isn\u2019t relying on just one<\/a> storytelling device.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s easier to get away with that the more invested everybody becomes in the characters. Definitely the twist in the pilot was the biggest,\u201d she noted. \u201cBecause you think you\u2019re watching a pretty standard procedural about a fish out of water in a law firm. Then suddenly you introduce this story line that now has to carry two plots and two different sets of characters through every episode.\u201d<\/p>\n
