\u201cDid you watch a lot of Grey\u2019s Anatomy<\/em><\/a> growing up?\u201d It\u2019s a question asked in the second episode of Pulse,<\/em> a new medical drama now streaming on Netflix, by Willa Fitzgerald<\/strong>\u2019s Dr. Danny Simms, a waifish blonde not unlike Ellen Pompeo<\/strong>\u2019s Meredith Grey. Her fellow physician Camila (Daniela Nieves<\/strong>) confirms that she has. \u201cOkay,\u201d Danny replies. \u201cTry to unlearn that.\u201d<\/p>\n The show could stand to take its own medicine. Created by Zoe Robyn,<\/strong> an alum of network procedurals like Hawaii Five-0<\/em> and The Equalizer,<\/em> and executive produced by Lost<\/em>\u2019s Carlton Cuse,<\/strong> Pulse<\/em> is Netflix\u2019s first English-language medical procedural\u2014and a blatant attempt to lure in kids who grew up on Grey\u2019s Anatomy,<\/em> which is now in its 21st season. Rain-soaked Seattle has been traded for sunny Miami. A moody soundtrack of songs by the Fray and Snow Patrol gets swapped for Top 40 hits like Benson Boone<\/strong>\u2019s \u201cBeautiful Things\u201d and Shaboozey<\/strong>\u2019s \u201cA Bar Song (Tipsy).\u201d But both shows revolve around a group of diverse, ambitious medical professionals who navigate life and love while also performing radical procedures at a moment\u2019s notice.<\/p>\n Pulse<\/em> knows it will draw comparisons to Grey\u2019s Anatomy,<\/em> and makes a few attempts to subvert those expectations. Grey\u2019s<\/em> famously kicks off with surgical intern Meredith Grey sleeping with a man she\u2019ll only later learn is neurosurgery chief Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey<\/strong>). Their romance is frowned upon, but rendered sexy good fun. The new series, though, begins with Danny making an HR complaint after getting involved in a power-imbalanced relationship with her own chief resident. The male doctor, Xander (Colin Woodell<\/strong>), is temporarily suspended; Danny, meanwhile, is promoted. Flashbacks gradually reveal that their relationship is more complicated than any disclosure form could capture.<\/p>\n A tortured inter-hospital love affair isn\u2019t Danny\u2019s only parallel to Meredith Grey. She also has a tragic backstory that gets dredged up in the workplace, thanks to the presence of her sister Harper (Jessy Yates<\/strong>)\u2014who is also conveniently a doctor at Maguire. Like Meredith\u2019s little sister Lexie (Chyler Leigh<\/strong>), Harper is sympathetic toward their neglectful father. Danny blames herself for the accident that left Harper in a wheelchair, leading to some tortured lines like this: \u201cYou want to suffer more than the people you hurt because maybe if you do, they\u2019ll forgive you.\u201d<\/p>\n Like Grey\u2019s, Pulse<\/em> loves a catastrophic event. Season one kicks off with a hurricane that forces the hospital into lockdown, and ends with a late-breaking confession from a doctor whose unforced error killed a patient. (Does Preston Burke leaving a surgical towel in a body cavity remain the most egregious mistake in hospital-show history?) Searching for a severed body part, slicing in the dark when the hospital loses power, removing a strange foreign object from a patient\u2019s rectum\u2014they\u2019re all plot points you can find on both Pulse<\/em> and Grey\u2019s,<\/em> as well as any number of other medical dramas.<\/p>\n It\u2019s tough to make one of these shows feel purely original; just ask the team behind Max\u2019s hit The Pitt<\/em><\/a>,<\/em> who are being sued by<\/a> the estate of ER<\/em> creator Michael Crichton, which alleges that the series is an unauthorized reboot of ER.<\/em> The creators of The Pitt<\/em> deny that accusation. (The Pitt,<\/em> which has been renewed for a second season, reteams ER<\/em> producers R. Scott Gemmill<\/strong> and John Wells<\/strong> with ER<\/em> star Noah Wyle.<\/strong>) But while similar storylines can be blamed on genre conventions, the one-to-one relationship between Pulse<\/em>\u2019s characters and their obvious Grey\u2019s<\/em> inspirations is harder to ignore.<\/p>\n
