The 70-year-old actor is known for playing strong, stoic characters, but revealed in reality he has a softer side \u2013 admitting he was overcome with emotion while watching the superhero film during its 2018 premiere.<\/p>\n
He was quoted by People saying: \u201cI cried a little bit when I saw \u2018Black Panther\u2019. I was on Broadway (performing in \u2018The Iceman Cometh\u2019), in fact, and I went to the premiere, and I wasn\u2019t interested in the red carpet and all that.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo I went backstage and I saw (actor) Chad (Boseman) and (director) Ryan (Coogler.) <\/p>\n
\u201cI spoke to them and then I sat down and watched the movie. And I felt like the baton had been passed. I was like, \u2018Wow, these young boys are gone.\u2019\u201d <\/p>\n
\n\u2018Black Panther\u2019, which also starred Michael B. Jordan, has been hailed as groundbreaking due to its representation of black superheroes. <\/p>\n
\nDenzel added: \u201cYou know, I didn\u2019t know then they were gonna make a billion dollars, but they did. So that, uh, that was a special moment for me.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cI felt, I don\u2019t know if the word is \u2018relieved,\u2019 but I was proud to see what they had done and seeing where they were headed.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nIn an upcoming appearance in \u2018Number One on the Call Sheet\u2019, the two-part Apple TV+ documentary that aired on 28 March, Denzel tells of his experiences in Hollywood.<\/p>\n
\nThe first episode, directed by Reginald Hudlin, examines black male actors, featuring interviews with Denzel, Eddie Murphy, Morgan Freeman, Will Smith and Jamie Foxx. <\/p>\n
\nEpisode two, directed by Shola Lynch, focuses on black women in Hollywood, with appearances from Halle Berry, Viola Davis, Gabrielle Union and more.<\/p>\n
\nOscar-winning Denzel is set to appear in the next \u2018Black Panther\u2019 film, with Ryan Coogler writing a role for him.<\/p>\n
\nThe Apple documentary also celebrates the legacy of Chadwick Boseman, who passed away in 2020 at the age of 43 after a cancer battle, and highlights the continued cultural relevance of \u2018Black Panther\u2019.<\/p>\n
