The White Lotus<\/em><\/a> star Jon Gries<\/strong> revealed that he used inspiration from real life killer Robert Durst to concoct his character Gary\u2019s backstory for season 3.<\/p>\n As Jimmy Kimmel<\/strong> previously said, Jon\u2019s role went from \u201ca nice guy named Greg who turned into a bad guy named Gary,\u201d which is why the Napoleon Dynamite<\/em> star<\/a> had to revise some of his previous thoughts about his character. When White Lotus<\/em> creator Mike White<\/strong> described Gary as \u201cvery sinister,\u201d Jon found inspiration in some unlikely sources, like HBO\u2019s documentary The Jinx<\/em>, which is about Durst and his crimes.<\/p>\n Jon said that he noticed Durst\u2019s \u201ckind of seemingly even keel personality\u201d during an interview with CNN<\/em><\/a> published on Friday, March 28. He said he used that as a foundation for Gary in season 3 as someone \u201cwho doesn\u2019t really show a great deal of emotion, doesn\u2019t seem to get too angry, just gets a little bit irritated and is dangerous.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThere\u2019s a bridled rage underneath. And those kind of people I find \u2013 at least with respect to Gary, Greg, Gary \u2013 fascinating,\u201d Jon added.<\/p>\n Durst, a real estate heir, was convicted of killing his friend Susan Berman in 2000. He died at the age of 78 in January 2022 while still in prison.<\/p>\n When fans first met Gary in season 1 of The White Lotus<\/em>, he pretended to be seriously ill, and that was something Jon took into consideration while getting into character.<\/p>\n \u201cIn the beginning, I totally played him for a guy who was, you know, on his last legs,\u201d Jon told the outlet. \u201cWhen you play a character, you want to find his empathetic side, and you want to understand where they came from, and what got them to where they are.\u201d<\/p>\n Fans saw Gary play a part in his wife Tanya McQuoid\u2019s death in season 2. However, the Lost<\/em> alum admitted that he didn\u2019t realize just how unhinged Gary was until recently during an interview with The Wrap<\/em><\/a> on March 9.<\/p>\n \u201cI somehow equivocated that Greg was remotely involved, but not as deeply involved. But definitely upon looking at season 2 over again, I\u2019m like, \u2018Where did I ever come up with that idea?\u2019\u201d Jon explained to the publication at the time. \u201cMike was walking briskly to get to set \u2026 and I saw him, and I ran up to him, and I said, \u2018Hey, Greg \u2014 psychopath or not?\u2019 And he goes, \u2018psychopath\u2019 and walked away. And I went right back into my room and spent the next four hours just writing the story and changing things, and it really gave me something to work with.\u201d<\/p>\n Gary certainly hasn\u2019t redeemed himself in The White Lotus<\/em> season 3 so far, and many fans are hoping that the character meets a brutal end this season<\/a>.<\/p>\n One Redditor<\/a> wrote, \u201cI hope Greg gets a Mortal Kombat<\/em> fatality level gruesome death and all of my perfect angels get kissed on the forehead and tucked into bed for a good night\u2019s sleep.\u201d<\/p>\n However, when Jon sat down for an interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live<\/em><\/a>, he teased the possibility<\/a> that Gary might live to see another day after all.<\/p>\n \u201cI hope he \u2026I hope he \u2026you know, has a good ending for me somewhere,\u201d Jon told the late night host. \u201cI dunno, maybe this year, you never know.\u201d<\/p>\n
