\n<\/noscript><\/picture><\/span><\/div>\nJacket and pants by Dior Men;<\/strong> tank top by Calvin Klein;<\/strong> boots by Camperlab;<\/strong> bracelets by John Hardy.<\/strong><\/span>Photograph by Nick Riley Bentham; Styled by Jake Sammis.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\nMazino recently took another major trip\u2014 bouncing from Tokyo to Indonesia\u2014because he\u2019d just finished the second season of the wrenching zombie hit The Last of Us,<\/em> which premieres April 13. \u201cI never judged my character, but he\u2019s a bit of a Boy Scout,\u201d says Mazino. \u201cHe definitely tapped into the brighter, warmer side of myself because I think I\u2019m by default a little darker than him spiritually.\u201d<\/p>\nGrowing up the son of Korean immigrants in Silver Spring, Maryland, Mazino felt like becoming an artist was an \u201coutlandish decision.\u201d He kept quiet about his love of theater: \u201cI didn\u2019t want my friends in athletics to know I was doing the musical, so I never told anyone until they\u2019d see me on the stage,\u201d he says. \u201cI was dealing with an existential crisis before I even knew what that was.\u201d<\/p>\n

When he registered with SAG-AFTRA, he discovered there were too many actors with his given name, Christopher Kim. So he went with his Korean name, Young, and a surname inspired by Urek Mazino, a character in the South Korean web toon Tower of God.<\/em> \u201cHis ideal is to not just get to the top of this tower, but to leave the tower and be under the real stars,\u201d Mazino says of his namesake. \u201cThat name was, in a way, to empower myself to strive for better, and be greater than I felt.\u201d Even after finding success, Mazino isn\u2019t sure how he fits into Hollywood as a Korean American actor. \u201cI do find myself in this weird kind of in-between,\u201d he says. \u201cHow selective can I be when I\u2019m already in this weird space?\u201d<\/p>\nLately, he\u2019s been spending time in Maryland with his family. Other than that, he lives nowhere in particular, though he\u2019s thinking about returning to New York. He just had a small role in the A24 thriller Opus;<\/em> he\u2019d love to work with Hirokazu Kore-eda, Derek Cianfrance, and Terrence Malick someday.
