There was almost a huge change to the Severance<\/em><\/strong><\/a> season two finale ending.<\/p>\n Spoilers ahead if you haven\u2019t seen!<\/p>\n The finale for the second season ends with Mark S. (Adam Scott<\/strong><\/a>) changing between his innie and his outie as he heads between different floors at Lumon. <\/p>\n Keep reading to find out more\u2026<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n A brief synopsis, if you need to get caught up<\/strong>: Mark\u2019s outie ends up reuniting with his beloved wife Gemma (Dichen Lachman<\/strong><\/a>) \u2013 who also has multiple innies and vacillates between them as she\u2019s being saved from the bowels of Lumon.<\/em><\/p>\n Mark and Gemma end up making it back to the severed floor, where Mark is now back as his innie and Gemma becomes one version of her innie, Miss Casey. At this point, they have no conscious memory of their romantic history, apart from what Mark\u2019s outie has told Mark\u2019s innie.<\/p>\n Innie Mark gets her to the hallway door, where she\u2019ll revert back to her outie, Gemma. He gets her to go out the door, but when it\u2019s his turn to walk through and become outie Mark, he sees Helly R. at the end of the hallway behind him.<\/p>\n Innie Mark is in love with innie Helly, whose outie is one of the head honchos at Lumon, Helena Eagan.<\/p>\n Innie Mark is then faced with a choice: step outside of the severed floor and reunite his outie with Gemma, or, stay severed and be with Helly inside Lumon\u2019s severed floor, leaving Gemma in the outside world alone.<\/p>\n Mark chooses Helly, and they run off together in the severed floor.<\/p>\n Now, the show\u2019s creator, Dan Erickson<\/strong>, revealed the season 2 finale originally had a different ending in his head.<\/p>\n The Wrap<\/a> asked Dan <\/strong>if the season 2 finale was always going to be a choice between Gemma and Helly.<\/p>\n Dan <\/strong>responded, \u201cKind of the whole time. That was something that was built-in from the conception of this season, although it\u2019s funny \u2014 I hate to keep telling Ben Stiller<\/strong><\/a> that he was right and I was wrong, specifically about finales. But in Season 1, I remember I was like, \u2018It should be [Mark] writing \u2018She\u2019s alive,\u2019 but then it gets cut off before he finishes.\u2019 And Ben was like, \u2018No, no, no, no, he\u2019s going to yell it.\u2019 I was like, \u2018All right, let\u2019s see how it works.\u2019 And then it was one of the best moments I\u2019d ever seen on TV.\u201d<\/p>\n He then said about the season 2 finale, \u201cSimilarly here, I had come up with a version where Helly was not there, and Mark makes the decision to go back and finds her later. Ben<\/strong> \u2014 goddamn it \u2014 in his wisdom, was like, \u2018It\u2019s going to be such a moment if they\u2019re both there.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n Dan <\/strong>continued, \u201cIt\u2019s not even because it\u2019s a choice between these two women, but because we had built up how much each of these relationships define Mark\u2019s identity. The relationship with Helly is a signifier of his whole innie life he\u2019s built and that he\u2019s worked toward, and Gemma is someone whom I think he has great empathy for, but she\u2019s not his person. So he\u2019s choosing his life over this life that he\u2019s always felt beholden to, which is his outie\u2019s. That\u2019s really the journey of the season.\u201d<\/p>\n He added, \u201cThe very first thing we see him do this season is he runs out of the elevator and almost instinctively goes to find Ms. Casey, as opposed to going to find Helly and his other friends to see if they\u2019re OK. That\u2019s because he doesn\u2019t value himself on the level that he values his outie at the start of the season. By the end, he does.
