On March 6, Matt Damon<\/strong><\/a> was spotted arriving in Greece to film The Odyssey<\/em>. But that didn\u2019t stop him from showing up to support best bud Ben Affleck<\/strong><\/a> at the premiere of his latest flick, The Accountant 2<\/em> \u2014 which took place all the way in Austin\u00a0\u2014\u00a0just two days later.<\/p>\n

Ben was clearly touched by his pal\u2019s presence.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t need a million friends. You need a few good ones,\u201d he told reporters on March 8. \u201cI\u2019m really lucky to have had a friend in Matt<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Outside of the red-carpet<\/a> bromance, hilarious Dunkin\u2019 commercials and joint projects they work on through their Artists Equity production company, the pair have a genuine bond \u2014 and Matt, 54, gets to see a side of Ben, 52, that nobody else knows.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t want to be his friend in public,\u201d \u00a0the Oppenheimer<\/em> star has said to GQ<\/em><\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s way too important a friendship for that, and it goes so beyond this career or anything. You know, it\u2019s a significant part of my life and not for public consumption.\u201d<\/p>\n

Indeed, Ben told GQ<\/em> he credits his BFF for helping him survive Hollywood.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy own kind of sanity and mental health really benefited from having someone who I grew up with and knew as a child who was also going through something similar,\u201d he noted. \u201cIt\u2019s just been such an asset to me.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Boston natives met when Ben was 8 and Matt was 10 and connected over a shared love of baseball and acting. But what truly cemented their friendship was Ben stepping up to defend Matt in a fight with bigger kids.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe will put himself in a really bad spot for me,\u201d Matt recalled on Conan<\/em>. \u201cThis is a good friend.\u201d<\/p>\n

As young actors in the \u201880s, the duo competed for roles but always rooted for each other and even kept a joint bank account for audition expenses and other necessities.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou were allowed to take out $10 and get quarters and go to [the arcade] and play video games,\u201d \u00a0Matt said on \u201cThe Bill Simmons Podcast.\u201d \u201cEventually, we were allowed to try to buy beer.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sometimes, like in 1992\u2019s School Ties<\/em>, they got to share the screen. Of course, it was another joint venture, 1997\u2019s Good Will Hunting<\/em>, that turned the pair into industry darlings and scored them their first Oscar wins for screenwriting.<\/p>\n

Since then, they\u2019ve collabed again and again \u2014\u00a0from their Project Greenlight<\/em> competition series to 2023\u2019s Air<\/em>, which they starred in and Ben directed.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was great,\u201d Matt told Today<\/em> of making the movie. \u201cYou can waste so much time by trying to be polite \u2026 We can just say, \u2018You suck.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Their personal relationship has only gotten stronger as the years go on, too.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter my dad passed in 2017 \u2026 it changed something in us, I think,\u201d Matt spilled on Who\u2019s Talking to Chris Wallace?<\/em>. \u201cYou start to see the end game and you start to feel like, \u2018I want to make every second count.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
