The Shifting Gears<\/em> season finale was teasing a romantic moment between Kat Dennings<\/strong><\/a> and Seann William Scott<\/strong><\/a> \u2014 so imagine our surprise when it was Tim Allen<\/strong><\/a> and Jenna Elfman<\/strong><\/a> who ended up sharing a kiss.<\/p>\n During the Wednesday, March 19, episode titled \u201cKiss,\u201d Gabriel (Scott) prepared for Riley (Dennings) to potentially reconcile with her ex. Riley didn\u2019t, but she wasn\u2019t ready for something new either so Gabriel didn\u2019t make a move. Instead, in the final moments of the finale, Eve (Elfman) surprised Matt (Allen) after an entire episode of banter by kissing him.<\/a><\/p>\n \u201cI thought it was a really fun twist because it seems like of course it\u2019s going to be Riley and Gabriel,\u201d Dennings, 38, exclusively told Us Weekly<\/em>. \u201cBut it was a real surprise.\u201d<\/p>\n Dennings and Scott, 48, agreed that the romantic finale moment made more sense for Eve and Matt<\/a>\u2018s relationship, with her adding, \u201cIt\u2019s a surprise kiss for Tim Allen\u2019s character. But I feel like Eve got a little liquid courage in that moment to do that \u2014 maybe she wasn\u2019t planning on it. I think it\u2019s a great moment.\u201d<\/p>\n Earlier this season, Elfman, 53, joined the cast in a recurring role<\/a> as a potential love interest for Allen, 71. The actress told Us<\/em> that she was excited to see how the hit ABC sitcom would approach a show where Allen wasn\u2019t married on screen after his past projects, including Home Improvement<\/em> and Last Man Standing<\/em>, paired the actor with a wife.<\/p>\n \u201cYou\u2019re going to see more of the dynamic between Matt and Eve,\u201d Elfman teased in February. \u201cJust more forthright communication, opinions and exchange. You get to see people being their full selves in each other\u2019s face. It\u2019s really fun.\u201d<\/p>\n Elfman went on to praise Allen for being a perfect scene partner. \u201cHe\u2019s so confident as a comedic actor. He\u2019s just confident and I\u2019m confident and we don\u2019t care if something [doesn\u2019t land],\u201d she noted to Us<\/em> at the time. \u201cWhen you\u2019ve been doing it long enough, you\u2019re not paranoid about a joke not working and you don\u2019t care. There\u2019s no preciousness and there\u2019s enough confidence to support the exploration of the scene of humor.\u201d<\/p>\n
