Mirror, mirror on the wall, what\u2019s the most cursed film of all? In 2025, at least, the answer might be Snow White<\/em>. Disney\u2019s $270 million musical remake of the animated classic, starring Rachel Zegler<\/strong> and Gal Gadot,<\/strong> is set to premiere on March 21\u2014but it\u2019s already been making headlines for three years. From MAGA backlash to ableism discourse to reported tension between its two stars, Snow White<\/em> has been plagued by enough controversy to drive anyone to a poisoned apple. Here\u2019s a timeline of everything that Snow White<\/em> has had to endure on its tricky trip to the big screen.<\/p>\n October 31, 2016<\/strong>: On All Hallow’s Eve, The Hollywood Reporter<\/em> announces<\/a> that Disney is developing a live-action musical film adaptation of Snow White<\/em>\u2014the latest in a string of big-screen reimaginings kicked off by the studio\u2019s critically and commercially successful redos of Cinderella<\/em> and The Jungle Book<\/em>. Director Marc Webb<\/strong> (500 Days of Summer<\/em> and The Amazing Spiderman 2<\/em>) will helm the film based on a script from screenwriter Erin Cressida Wilson (<\/strong> The Girl on the Train<\/em>). Songwriting duo Benj Pasek<\/strong> and Justin Paul<\/strong>, the future EGOT-winning team<\/a> behind Dear Evan Hansen<\/em>, La La Land<\/em>, and The Greatest Showman<\/em>, are tapped to write new music for the film, which will be produced by Legally Blonde<\/em> and Wicked<\/em> superproducer Marc Platt<\/strong>. What could possibly go wrong?<\/p>\n June 22, 2021:<\/strong> But who will play the film\u2019s titular role? None other than rising starlet Rachel Zegler. Zegler is cast months before the world is introduced to her as Maria in Steven Spielberg<\/strong>\u2019s remake of West Side Story<\/em>\u2014a role that will soon win her a Golden Globe for best actress in musical or comedy. At the time, Deadline<\/em> reports<\/a> that \u201cearly footage of Zegler in West Side Story<\/em>\u201d is so strong that it clinched Zegler the leading role. \u201cHer strength, intelligence, and optimism will become an integral part of rediscovering the joy in this classic Disney fairy tale,\u201d says Webb in a statement.<\/p>\n June 2021<\/strong>: Zegler\u2019s casting immediately causes uproar online. Right-leaning Disney fans, still smarting at the fact that Halle Bailey,<\/strong> a Black woman, has been tapped to play Ariel in The Little Mermaid<\/em> remake<\/a>, redirect their ire at Zegler, who is Latina. Conservatives rail against Disney for \u201cgoing woke\u201d<\/a> and casting ethnically diverse women to play their beloved fictional princesses\u2014a totally normal and not at all stupid thing to be mad at.<\/p>\n November 4, 2021:<\/strong> Gal Gadot, star of Wonder Woman<\/em> and deliverer of the line \u201cenough champagne to fill the Nile\u201d in Death on the Nile,<\/em> is cast to play the Evil Queen<\/a>. There\u2019s no drama here yet, but watch this space.<\/p>\n January 24, 2022<\/strong>: While appearing on Marc Maron<\/strong>\u2019s WTF<\/em> podcast<\/a>, Peter Dinklage<\/strong> slams the reimagined Snow White<\/em><\/a>. \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of hypocrisy going on,\u201d he says. \u201cLiterally no offense to anyone, but I was a little taken aback [when] they were very proud to cast a Latina actress as Snow White. But you\u2019re still telling the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.<\/em> Take a step back and look at what you\u2019re doing there. It makes no sense to me.\u201d<\/p>\n Dinklage clarifies that he has nothing against Zegler\u2014the two would go on to star together in The Hunger Games: Ballad of Song Birds and Snakes<\/em> in 2023\u2014but makes it exceedingly clear that he is offended by the very concept of remaking Snow White<\/em>, a fairy tale that presents little people in a retrograde way. \u201cYou\u2019re progressive in one way but then you\u2019re still making that fucking backward story about seven dwarfs living in a cave together,\u201d he says. \u201cWhat the fuck are you doing, man?\u201d<\/p>\n January 25, 2022:<\/strong> Disney quickly responds to Dinklage\u2019s comments about the representation of dwarfism in Snow White<\/em>. In a statement to Deadline<\/a>, a Disney spokesperson says the following: \u201cTo avoid reinforcing stereotypes from the original animated film, we are taking a different approach with these seven characters and have been consulting with members of the dwarfism community. We look forward to sharing more as the film heads into production after a lengthy development period.\u201d<\/p>\n
