Just like Us<\/em>, Kelvin Harrison Jr.<\/strong> has some feelings about Universal Pictures deciding to shelve the star-studded Pharrell Williams<\/strong><\/a> biopic.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s always sad when you\u2019ve invested your time into something, and I was really excited about that story,\u201d Harrison Jr., 30, exclusively told Us Weekly<\/em> on Tuesday, March 11 while walking the Searchlight Pictures O\u2019Dessa<\/em> special screening red carpet at the Metrograph in in New York City.<\/p>\n

\u201cI got to work with all these amazing actors that I love so much, and artists that I admired and looked up to, like Missy Elliot<\/strong>, Anderson Paak<\/strong> and Janelle Mon\u00e1e<\/strong> \u2013 the list goes on,\u201d he continued. \u201cBut ultimately, I still have the memory, and I still grew a lot and I learned a lot from the experience. And I still have a lot of videos and photos on my phone from that time. So, I have the movie in my head.\u201d<\/p>\n

The biopic \u2014 titled Golden<\/em>, though it was originally named Atlantic<\/em> \u2014 was directed by Michel Gondry<\/strong>, best known for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind<\/em>. A musical meant to detail the childhood of Williams, 51, the film featured a star-studded cast, including Harrison Jr., Elliot, Paak, Mon\u00e1e, Halle Bailey<\/strong>, Da\u2019Vine Joy Randolph<\/strong>, Brian Tyree Henry<\/strong>, Quinta Brunson<\/strong> and Jaboukie Young-White<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tPlaying a legend! While many celebrities had iconic career milestones through the years, it can be an impressive feat to see such accomplishments recreated on the big screen. Celebrities such as Dolly Parton, Justin Bieber and Hillary Clinton are among the few who already have casting ideas in mind, though no films have officially been [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Initially scheduled to be released on May 5, Universal Pictures decided to permanently shutter the project in February, 2025. Variety<\/em> was the first to report the news<\/a>, adding that the studio has no plans to shop the film around, either.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s such a beautiful story about honoring where you come from, your hometown, and joy and just knowing that the journey is wrong and the route that we\u2019re on is ever-changing and evolving and we have to embrace that and not be afraid of the journey,\u201d Harrison Jr. said of the project. \u201cAnd it is such a broad thing, but it is hard to explain. It\u2019s one of those movies to experience and Michelle Gondry directed. You know what I\u2019m saying? It\u2019s a bummer, but it\u2019s cool.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to Variety<\/em>, the film was \u201cshut down after unanimous agreement from producers and Gondry that the film did not live up to its developed conceit.\u201d The outlet reported that Gil Netter<\/strong>, known for his work on The Blind Side<\/em>, was a producer alongside Williams and his creative partner Mimi Valdes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tSteve Granitz\/FilmMagic; Michael Loccisano\/WireImage Madame Web, Marvel\u2019s latest superhero movie and a Spider-Man spinoff, debuted in February 2024 to overwhelmingly negative reviews. Its 13 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes and 26\/100 Metacritic score were bad enough, but the film\u2019s star Dakota Johnson\u2019s own comments on the movie\u2019s press tour didn\u2019t exactly help matters. Asked if [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cWhen all of us got into the editing room we collectively decided there wasn\u2019t a path forward to tell the version of this story that we originally envisioned,\u201d Williams and Gondry told the outlet in a joint statement. \u201cWe appreciate all the hard work of the talented cast and crew. While we\u2019re disappointed we can\u2019t deliver this film, we have incredible partners at Universal and will collaborate in a different capacity again soon.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know as much as you guys do,\u201d Harrison Jr. told Us<\/em> of the decision to cancel the project, adding that \u201cmaybe something will change, or maybe it won\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFor now, I\u2019m just at peace with their decision,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
