Let\u2019s get to it!<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Environmental impact: <\/strong>The FBI, the EPA, the EPA inspector general, and the Treasury Department <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/03\/13\/fbi-epa-and-treasury-told-citibank-to-freeze-funds-as-trump-administration-tries-to-claw-back-climate-money\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">requested that Citibank freeze accounts<\/a> of several nonprofits and state government agencies. The accounts were frozen in February, but the new documents make public details that had previously been unknown until they were revealed in court filings this week.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>SXSW comes to an end:<\/strong> TechCrunch was all over <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/storyline\/sxsw-2025-live-coverage-health-tips-from-bryan-johnson-concerns-about-elon-musk-and-what-its-like-to-actually-ride-a-waymo-uber-on-the-conferences-final-day\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SXSW in Austin<\/a> this week, riding in <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/snippet\/2980430\/what-we-discovered-when-we-finally-matched-with-a-waymo-robotaxi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Waymo taxis<\/a>, learning <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/03\/11\/mark-cuban-says-ai-is-never-the-answer-its-a-tool\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mark Cuban\u2019s thoughts on AI<\/a> (it\u2019s a tool, not a panacea), and deciphering the T-shirt that Bluesky\u2019s CEO wore (turns out she was <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/snippet\/2978139\/bluesky-ceo-jay-graber-takes-a-swipe-at-mark-zuckerberg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">taking a swipe at Mark Zuckerberg<\/a>).\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Intel\u2019s new chief: <\/strong>Intel <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/03\/12\/intel-appoints-lip-bu-tan-as-its-next-ceo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">appointed Lip-Bu Tan as its next CEO<\/a>. Tan, a Malaysia-born, longtime tech investor, formerly served as CEO of Cadence Design Systems and said that Intel will be an \u201cengineering-focused company\u201d under his leadership. Kathi Lentzsch, who has spent years helping turn around underperforming companies in both the consumer and B2B spaces, will take over the e-bike company as it continues to shift away from direct-to-consumer in favor of a retail-based approach.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Backdoor policies:<\/strong> Last month it was revealed that the U.K. government secretly ordered Apple to create a \u201cbackdoor,\u201d allowing authorities to access the cloud-stored data of all Apple customers. U.S. lawmakers are asking the head of the U.K.\u2019s surveillance court to <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/03\/14\/us-lawmakers-urge-uk-spy-court-to-hold-apple-backdoor-secret-hearing-in-public\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hold an open hearing<\/a> for Apple\u2019s possible challenge to the alleged secret U.K. government legal demand.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Food for thought: <\/strong>Bryan Johnson \u2014 the investor and founder behind the Don\u2019t Die movement \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/03\/13\/anti-aging-zealot-bryan-johnson-wants-to-start-foodome-sequencing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wants to start \u201cfoodome\u201d sequencing<\/a>. His goal is to test as much food as possible, creating a public database where people can donate money to have certain foods and brands tested for toxins.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>No parking: <\/strong>Waymo\u2019s 300 driverless vehicles in San Francisco are <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/03\/13\/waymo-was-slapped-with-nearly-600-parking-tickets-last-year-in-sf-alone\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">racking up parking tickets<\/a>. The cars\u2019 589 parking violations totaled $65,065 in fines last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Open Sesame: <\/strong>AI company Sesame <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/03\/13\/sesame-the-startup-behind-the-viral-virtual-assistant-maya-releases-its-base-ai-model\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has released the base model used for Maya<\/a>, its super-realistic voice assistant. The model is open source, too, which means it can be used commercially.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Tick tock, TikTok: <\/strong>TikTok\u2019s deadline to finalize its sale to a U.S. company is just around the corner, and now <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/03\/13\/oracle-is-reportedly-a-top-choice-for-storing-u-s-tiktok-user-data\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">another suitor is showing interest<\/a> \u2014 Oracle. Sources told The Information that ByteDance, TikTok\u2019s parent company, is favoring Oracle over other companies.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Little tech\u2019s hero: <\/strong>Y Combinator <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/03\/13\/y-combinator-urges-the-white-house-to-support-europes-digital-markets-act\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sent a letter to the White House<\/a> this week, urging the government to support Europe\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2024\/03\/07\/europes-dma-rules-for-big-tech-explained\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Digital Markets Act<\/a>, which aims to bust up Big Tech\u2019s market power. It\u2019s unclear how the White House will respond.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Caviar dreams:<\/strong> Trump\u2019s family has been <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/03\/14\/trump-family-is-reportedly-in-talks-to-acquire-stake-in-binances-us-arm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">looking into investing in Binance U.S.<\/a> This comes just a couple of years after Binance\u2019s U.S. arm plead guilty to violating anti-money laundering regulations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>That was easy:<\/strong> I\u2019m not opposed to AI, especially when it helps me be more efficient. Take, for example, <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/03\/10\/gmail-gains-an-add-to-calendar-button-powered-by-gemini\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a new feature that rolled out this week to Gmail<\/a>. We can now add events to a Google Calendar directly from an email. That\u2019s cool!<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Got him: <\/strong>The co-founder of Garantex, a Russian cryptocurrency exchange, <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/03\/12\/garantex-administrator-arrested-in-india-under-extradition-law\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">was arrested in India<\/a>. Last week, the U.S. Department of Justice accused Aleksej Besciokov of personally approving transactions on Garantex linked to North Korean-government hackers and other cybercriminals.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Pok\u00e9mon sold: <\/strong>Niantic, the company behind the viral sensation Pok\u00e9mon GO, is <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/03\/12\/pokemon-go-maker-niantic-is-selling-its-games-division-to-scopely-for-3-5b\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">selling its gaming division to Scopely<\/a> for $3.5 billion. Niantic said it will now focus on building real-world 3D maps through a new stand-alone entity called Niantic Spatial.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>DeepSeek, deep pockets?<\/strong> Though it has tons of interest, <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/03\/10\/deepseek-isnt-taking-vc-money-yet-here-are-3-reasons-why\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chinese AI company DeepSeek isn\u2019t taking VC money<\/a> \u2014 yet. Charles Rollet runs through a few reasons why.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>New day, new deal: <\/strong>OpenAI has signed a <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/03\/10\/in-another-chess-move-with-microsoft-openai-is-pouring-12b-into-coreweave\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">five-year, $11.9 billion agreement<\/a> with the GPU-heavy cloud service provider CoreWeave. But the amount of money isn\u2019t the only reason why this deal is eye-popping. Before this deal, CoreWeave\u2019s biggest customer was Microsoft.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Waymo One: <\/strong>Waymo is <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/03\/11\/waymo-expands-its-robotaxi-service-across-silicon-valley\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">expanding its early rider program<\/a> across Silicon Valley, now offering robotaxi rides to people in Palo Alto, Mountain View, Los Altos, and parts of Sunnyvale. The new territories add to the 55 square miles of coverage already offered in the San Francisco Bay Area.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Cool, cool: <\/strong>Fact-checking at Meta is <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/03\/13\/meta-is-launching-community-notes-in-the-us-next-week\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">getting an overhaul<\/a>. Starting Tuesday, the company will begin releasing its version of Community Notes for Facebook, Instagram, and Threads users in the United States.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>We\u2019ve got questions: <\/strong>Three years after its launch, exactly <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/03\/13\/apples-lockdown-mode-is-good-for-security-but-its-notifications-are-baffling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">how Lockdown Mode works is still a mystery<\/a>.
