Michael Jackson was accused of abuse by James Safechuck<\/p>\n
The 47 year old – who has claimed he was molested by the late singer from the age of 10 until his early teens – stayed close to the ‘Thriller’ hitmaker for some time after the alleged abuse ended but long after their bond evaporated, he was still dealing with the impact of what had happened.<\/p>\n
He told the Times newspaper: \u201cI think a part of me died. You are dead inside. <\/p>\n
“You go numb \u2014 you don\u2019t learn how to process events, good or bad. The self-hatred was really intense, but you don\u2019t know why you hate yourself. I know now that it\u2019s because instead of hating Michael, I hated myself.\u201d<\/p>\n
In his 20s, James turned to drugs including cocaine, marijuana and painkillers, to numb his feelings while playing in a band, but after landing a “day job” in tech, he gave up the substances and then began to “struggle”.<\/p>\n
\nHe said: \u201cWhen the drugs went away, though, then the pain started. I was hit with everything that had been masked and I was really struggling. You don\u2019t know why you\u2019re in so much pain; you don\u2019t connect the abuse to the pain that you\u2019re in at the moment.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nJames – who has children aged 14, 11 and six with wife Laura – admitted becoming a parent changed his thinking on the alleged abuse and he suffered a breakdown.<\/p>\n
\nHe said: \u201cMichael made you feel like you did it, that it was all your idea. Then you look at your own kid and for the first time you really realise, what? That just makes no sense.\u201d <\/p>\n
\nIn 2019, James and Wade Robson told their stories of alleged abuse at the hands of Jackson in the documentary ‘Leaving Neverland’, and James admitted his feelings about the ‘Bad’ singer have changed even since then.<\/p>\n
\nHe said: \u201cThrough talking with other survivors and continuing with therapy, my understanding of the abuse and what has happened has matured.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cWhen the movie came out there was still this bond and connection with Michael \u2014 you still have a connection to your abuser and there\u2019s still love, there\u2019s still fondness. I still felt guilty talking about it. I was still tethered.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cOver the years I have a better understanding of just the horribleness of what he did, how brutal it was, and some anger has developed.<\/p>\n
\n“It\u2019s the connections you make. It\u2019s finally speaking \u2014 putting words to what happened, putting words to your emotions. It\u2019s facing your fears.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cAnd seeing my kids become the age I was when I was abused allows me to have more of an outside perspective. I can see the insidiousness of what he did.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nAnd while James knows the sexual abuse allegations are the most “shocking” to people, he is more horrified by the abuse of power.<\/p>\n
\nHe said: \u201cThe sexual acts are shocking to many people, but I lived through them; they are just part of my life. It\u2019s everything around them \u2014 the power, the manipulation \u2014 that I find the most horrifying.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cIt took a little while to get used to having it out there and to get over this fear of everyone knowing.\u201d<\/p>\n
