Love Is Blind<\/em><\/a> star Ben Mezzenga<\/strong><\/a> seemed surprised when Sara Carton<\/strong> said no at the altar<\/a>, but she revealed that they had actually discussed their answers ahead of time.<\/p>\n \u201cI was shocked about that,\u201d Sara, 29, told People<\/em><\/a> in an interview published on Friday, March 7. \u201cUltimately, me and Ben talked multiple times before the wedding of discussing, \u2018Is this the safest decision for us? Is this the smartest decision for us? We really need to think about that.\u2019 And so we were on the same page, and he knew coming in what I was going to say.\u201d<\/p>\n The oncology nurse also felt like Ben\u2019s response was \u201cdisrespectful\u201d and that him asking if they could continue to date was somewhat \u201cinappropriate.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cAnd so when he asked that, I wasn\u2019t shocked he wanted to do that or be together still after, but I was shocked he asked that at the altar, knowing the circumstance of we are here to say yes or no,\u201d Sara explained to the outlet. \u201cAlso, just with the whole entire concept of you walk away forever, I was like, \u2018That\u2019s disrespectful, in a way, of what we signed up for and the whole entire point of why we\u2019re here.\u2019 And so I was shocked he asked that there.\u201d<\/p>\n The season 8 star continued, \u201cAlso, me saying no to a marriage, why would I continue dating someone? If you\u2019re going to say no to that, why even continue the relationship? That\u2019s been a theme of mine where I know in the past, my past relationships, I know that this person isn\u2019t my person, but oh, maybe they can change, or maybe there was potential there. I can see us growing together. And I didn\u2019t want to continue the cycle of that.\u201d<\/p>\n Sara confessed that she was \u201cvery happy\u201d with how she responded to his request because \u201c[she] didn\u2019t want to give an answer.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cMy mind, it was not in that setting at all. I just needed to process everything that was happening,\u201d she shared.<\/p>\n Fans saw Sara and Ben, 28, connect while they were still in the pods during Love Is Blind<\/em> season 8, but she was initially wary of the former college baseball player\u2019s lack of knowledge about certain social justice issues. However, when Ben proposed, she happily said yes.<\/p>\n After returning to their apartment in Minneapolis, Sara was sent a TikTok video<\/a> of a woman who claimed that Ben had treated her poorly in the past. While they seemingly worked through the problem<\/a>, Sara later revealed that the video actually set off a few warning bells in her head.<\/p>\n \u201cThe TikTok was hard. The TikTok is when I was like, \u2018I have a lot more I need to get to know about Ben.\u2019 I don\u2019t want that to make it seem like that was my decision-maker because I continued moving forward thinking, \u2018We can get past this,\u2019\u201d she told Us Weekly<\/em><\/a> on March 7. \u201cBut that was big for me. And that was big for my family, for trust and making sure this is a safe person to be with and to get married.\u201d<\/p>\n
