Google has quietly updated<\/a> the webpage<\/a> for its Responsible AI and Human Centered Technology (RAI-HCT) team, the team charged with conducting research into AI safety, fairness, and explainability, to scrub mentions of \u201cdiversity\u201d and \u201cequity.\u201d<\/p>\n A previous version of the page used language such as \u201cmarginalized communities,\u201d \u201cdiverse,\u201d \u201cunderrepresented groups,\u201d and \u201cequity\u201d to describe the RAI-HCT team\u2019s work. That language has been removed, or in some cases replaced with less specific wording (e.g. \u201call,\u201d \u201cvaried,\u201d and \u201cnumerous\u201d rather than \u201cdiverse\u201d) <\/p>\n Google didn\u2019t immediately respond to a request for comment. <\/p>\n Date: Feb 26 \u2013 March 6, 2025 \u2014 The Midas Project Watchtower (@SafetyChanges) March 8, 2025<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n The changes, which were spotted by watchdog group The Midas Project, come after Google deleted<\/a> similar language from its Startups Founders Fund\u00a0grant website. The company said in early February<\/a> that it would eliminate its diversity hiring targets and review its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs.<\/p>\n Google is among the many big tech companies\u00a0that have rolled back DEI initiatives<\/a> as the Trump Administration targets what it characterizes as an \u201cillegal<\/a>\u201d practice.\u00a0Amazon<\/a> and\u00a0Meta<\/a>\u00a0have walked back DEI measures over the past few months, and OpenAI\u00a0recently removed mentions of diversity and inclusion from a webpage on its hiring practices<\/a>. Apple, however, recently pushed back against a shareholder proposal<\/a> to end its DEI programs.<\/p>\n Many of these companies, including Google, have contracts with federal agencies.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n
