The country singer, 79, confirmed his passing in a statement on Instagram on Monday (03.03.25), saying he had died in Nashville on 3 March.<\/p>\n
She said: \u201cCarl and I spent many wonderful years together. Words can’t do justice to the love we shared for over 60 years. Thank you for your prayers and sympathy.\u201d<\/p>\n
Carl, renowned for staying out of the spotlight, is survived by his siblings, Sandra and Donnie, and will be laid to rest in a private ceremony with immediate family.<\/p>\n
He and Dolly were married since 1966. <\/p>\n
\nDespite her global fame, Carl largely avoided the spotlight. <\/p>\n
\nIn 2024, she spoke about his preference for privacy on Bunnie Xo\u2019s \u2018Dumb Blonde\u2019 podcast, explaining: \u201cHe loves music, but he’s not the least bit interested in being in it.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nDolly also recalled a moment early in their marriage when she convinced him to attend an awards show in 1967, where she won BMI Song of the Year. <\/p>\n
\nDespite the win, Carl told her: \u201cI wish you the best, but don\u2019t ever ask me to go to another one of these damn things because I ain’t going.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nDolly has frequently spoken about their relationship, crediting their shared sense of humour for its longevity. <\/p>\n
\nShe said: \u201cHe’s quiet and I\u2019m loud, and we\u2019re funny\u2026 we have a lot of fun.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nThe singer and Carl first met at a laundromat in Nashville in 1964, when Parton was 18. <\/p>\n
\nShe later spoke about the encounter in \u2018Dolly Parton: In Her Own Words\u2019, saying: \u201cI walked outside, there was this good-looking man that drove by the Wishy-Washy laundromat. And he pulled over to the side. So we started talking and we married two years later.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nDespite staying out of the limelight, Carl has inspired some of Parton\u2019s work, including her 1973 hit \u2018Jolene\u2019. <\/p>\n
\nSpeaking to NPR in 2008, she said: \u201cShe got this terrible crush on my husband. And he just loved going to the bank because she paid him so much attention.\u201d <\/p>\n
\nYears later, while at the Glastonbury festival, she added: \u201cI wrote that years ago when my husband\u2026 was spending a little more time with \u2018Jolene\u2019 than I thought he should be. I put a stop to that. I got rid of that redhead woman in a hurry.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nThough Carl never attended events with her, Parton said they found ways to maintain their romance. <\/p>\n
\nIn 2022, she told E! News: \u201cEvery day, I put on some makeup and fix my hair because I think, \u2018Well, the whole world, I’m out here and everybody else sees me all dressed up, and I’m not going to just kind of go home and just flop on him.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
\nIn her 2017 book \u2018Dolly on Dolly: Interviews and Encounters with Dolly Parton\u2019, the country veteran said: \u201cMen are my weakness. <\/p>\n
\n\u201cShort, fat, bald or skinny \u2013 I\u2019ve had crushes on some very unusual men but Carl knows I\u2019ll always come home. He\u2019s not jealous and I\u2019m not jealous of him.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nSpeaking on \u2018The Zoe Ball Breakfast Show\u2019 on BBC Radio 2 in 2023, she said their relationship lasted because of \u201clove and respect\u201d, adding: \u201cYou know, I would have liked him if he wasn\u2019t my husband. If he was somebody else\u2019s husband, I\u2019d say, \u2018You know that Carl Dean, ain\u2019t he funny? Ain\u2019t he a good guy?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
\nDolly has previously said Carl has only seen her perform once. <\/p>\n
\nShe told Entertainment Tonight about a conversation where he said: \u201cI didn\u2019t choose this world, I chose you, and you chose that world. But we can keep our lives separate and together.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nIn 2011, she told the Toronto Sun: \u201cWe\u2019re really very proud of our marriage. It\u2019s the first for both of us. And the last.\u201d<\/p>\n
