Preliminary autopsies conducted on the bodies of the late Gene Hackman<\/strong><\/a> and his wife, Betsy Arakawa<\/strong>, showed no signs of \u201cexternal trauma to either individual.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Oscar winner and his wife were examined by the Santa Fe, New Mexico, medical investigator\u2019s office Thursday, February 27, after they were found dead<\/a> at their Santa Fe home a day earlier.<\/p>\n

In a news release obtained by CNN<\/a> and People<\/em><\/a>, the sheriff\u2019s office said Thursday that the couple\u2019s causes of death has yet to be determined. \u201cThis remains an open investigation,\u201d the department said, noting that official autopsy and toxicology reports are still pending.<\/p>\n

The sheriff\u2019s office also noted that carbon monoxide and toxicology tests have been requested for both Hackman and Arakawa, per CNN.<\/p>\n

Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza<\/strong> reiterated in Thursday\u2019s news release that there were \u201cno apparent signs of foul play\u201d in the deaths, but said the circumstances were \u201cunusual.\u201d (An initial statement from the sheriff\u2019s office, obtained by Us Weekly<\/em>, said that \u201cfoul play is not suspected as a factor\u201d in the deaths.\u201d)<\/p>\n

Us Weekly<\/em> has reached out to the Santa Fe County Sheriff\u2019s Department for comment.<\/p>\n

Earlier Thursday, a Santa Fe detective deemed the circumstances of the couple\u2019s death to be \u201csuspicious\u201d<\/a> in an affidavit to obtain a search warrant.<\/p>\n

The detective wrote that the circumstances were \u201csuspicious enough\u201d to \u201crequire a thorough search and investigation because the reporting party found the front door of the residence unsecured and opened, deputies observed a healthy dog running loose on the property, another healthy dog near the deceased female, a deceased dog laying 10-15 feet from the deceased female in a closet of the bathroom, the heater being moved, the pill bottle being opened and pills scattered next to the female, the male decedent being located in a separate room of the residence, and no obvious signs of a gas leak.\u201d<\/p>\n

The bodies of Hackman and his wife were discovered, along with one of their three dogs, on Wednesday, February 26. The affidavit noted that Arakawa displayed signs of \u201cmummification\u201d<\/a> and \u201cbloating,\u201d suggesting that she may have been dead for some time before being discovered.<\/p>\n

The Santa Fe County Sheriff\u2019s Office confirmed the couple\u2019s deaths in a statement to Us<\/em>\u00a0on Thursday.<\/p>\n
