So far the judicial system seems to be holding\u2014though a Trump-packed Supreme Court is now destined to rule on all manner of alleged overreach in the coming months. (And it\u2019s an open question as to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/news\/story\/republicans-trump-constitutional-chaos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">whether Trump will actually abide<\/a> by rulings that go against him.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Republicans in Congress, however, have consistently folded\u2014approving all of Trump\u2019s Cabinet picks, such as <strong>Robert F. Kennedy Jr.<\/strong> and <strong>Tulsi Gabbard,<\/strong> with only a faint whiff of pushback on some of their boundary-scorching backgrounds. The confirmations predictably short-circuited many Democratic observers, but the rolling headlines of late have even some Republicans decrying the seeming erosion of checks and balances in recent weeks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cThese are the heirs of the Greatest Generation, and they turned out to be the worst generation,\u201d says <strong>Stuart Stevens,<\/strong> who served as a chief strategist on <strong>Mitt Romney<\/strong>\u2019s 2012 presidential campaign and has since left the GOP, joining the anti-Trump Lincoln Project as a senior adviser. \u201cIt\u2019s tempting to compare Republicans to Prussian aristocrats in 1930s Germany. But Prussian aristocrats were more responsible. They were dealing with civil unrest and the threat of a communist takeover. Republicans today have historically low unemployment, a record stock market. What\u2019s their excuse?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Political survival is one. Senate and House Republicans know Trump will <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/12\/12\/us\/politics\/pete-hegseth-trump-defense-secretary.html\" class=\"external-link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/12\/12\/us\/politics\/pete-hegseth-trump-defense-secretary.html&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/12\/12\/us\/politics\/pete-hegseth-trump-defense-secretary.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">orchestrate<\/a> the running of a primary challenger backed by <strong>Elon Musk<\/strong>\u2019s unlimited resources if a member defies him. But this is not the whole story of Republican subservience to the president. In private, Republicans talk about their fear that Trump might incite his MAGA followers to commit political violence against them if they don\u2019t rubber-stamp his actions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cThey\u2019re scared shitless about death threats and Gestapo-like stuff,\u201d a former member of Trump\u2019s first administration tells me.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">According to one source with direct knowledge of the events, North Carolina senator <strong>Thom Tillis<\/strong> told people that the FBI warned him about \u201ccredible death threats\u201d when he was <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/politics\/pete-hegseth-thom-tillis-senate-confirmation-1974dd47\" class=\"external-link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/politics\/pete-hegseth-thom-tillis-senate-confirmation-1974dd47&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/politics\/pete-hegseth-thom-tillis-senate-confirmation-1974dd47\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">considering<\/a> voting against <strong>Pete Hegseth<\/strong>\u2019s nomination for defense secretary. Tillis ultimately provided the crucial 50th vote to confirm the former <em>Fox &amp; Friends<\/em> host to lead the Pentagon. The FBI said it had no comment.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-dropcap paywall\">From the moment Trump descended his golden escalator in June 2015 to announce his first run for president, he injected menace into his political rhetoric. On the campaign trail he talked about <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2016\/02\/donald-trump-punch-protester-219655\" class=\"external-link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2016\/02\/donald-trump-punch-protester-219655&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2016\/02\/donald-trump-punch-protester-219655\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">wanting<\/a> to punch protesters in the face. During his first term, he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2022\/05\/02\/trump-call-violence-presidency\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">praised<\/a> Montana\u2019s then representative <strong>Greg Gianforte<\/strong> for physically attacking <em>Guardian<\/em> reporter <strong>Ben Jacobs<\/strong> in 2017. \u201cAny guy that can do a body slam, he is my type!\u201d Trump said. (Gianforte <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/thetwo-way\/2017\/06\/12\/532613316\/montanas-gianforte-pleads-guilty-wont-serve-jail-time-in-assault-on-journalist\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">later pleaded guilty<\/a> to misdemeanor assault and received a six-month deferred jail sentence.) In a September 2020 debate against <strong>Joe Biden,<\/strong> Trump refused to condemn white supremacist violence and told the Proud Boys to \u201cstand back and stand by.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">January 6 further catalyzed GOP fear of Trump-inspired violence. You can\u2019t do that, Romney recalled someone saying. Think of your personal safety, said another. Think of your children. You were casting that vote after seeing with your own two eyes what some of these people are capable of,\u2019 Meijer says. \u2018If they\u2019re willing to come after you inside the US Capitol, what will they do when you\u2019re at home with your kids?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Trump\u2019s mass pardoning of January 6 participants has recentered those events in Republican minds of late.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cA guy sends a mob into your workplace to kill you, and you\u2019re okay with that?\u201d Stevens tells me, speaking about his frustration with congressional Republicans. Stevens says the clemencies send the message to Republicans that Trump will defend those who commit political violence in his name.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cI talked to Lincoln Project donors,\u201d Stevens says. \u201cThese are powerful and wealthy people. And I can tell you a percentage of them are talking about leaving the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cThe Republican Party is united,\u201d a White House spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Still, some say Republicans are using the threats of violence as cover. <strong>Bill Kristol,<\/strong> cofounder of the Never Trump outlet The Bulwark, tells me Republicans could ignore the threats if they wanted to.
