OpenAI has eliminated a page on its website that used to express its commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. The URL \u201chttps:\/\/openai.com\/commitment-to-dei\/<\/a>\u201d now redirects to \u201chttps:\/\/openai.com\/building-dynamic-teams\/<\/a>,\u201d a page that talks about people with \u201cdifferent backgrounds\u201d with no use of the word \u201cdiversity.\u201d<\/p>\n The previous page stated that the company\u2019s \u201cinvestment in diversity, equity and inclusion\u201d was ongoing. It also said that it was serious about this work<\/a> and was committed to \u201ccontinuously improving our work in creating a diverse, equitable, and inclusive organization,\u201d as captured by the Internet Web Archive and also as cited by a 2023 CNN article<\/a>.<\/p>\n It isn\u2019t clear exactly when this change was made, but there\u2019s some evidence it was very recent. The diversity commitment web page was cited as available by an ABC News story<\/a> published on January 22. By January 27, OpenAI had published<\/a> the new, replacement \u201cbuilding dynamic teams\u201d web page.<\/p>\n The new page says, \u201cAt OpenAI, we recognize that the strongest ideas emerge when they are tested, debated, and improved by people with different backgrounds, experiences, and ways of thinking. We encourage a culture of curiosity where ideas can be challenged \u2014 not just accepted.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n OpenAI did not immediately respond to our request for comment about the website change or if it indicates any of the company\u2019s internal processes have been rolled back or altered. OpenAI\u2019s web page that promises \u201cfairness\u201d<\/a> in model training to remove social biases is still live, for instance.<\/p>\n OpenAI is hardly the only company to distance itself from the wording of DEI as these specific words \u2014 as well as the concepts behind them \u2014 face fierce political and legal backlash these days. Last week, Attorney General Pam Bondi instructed<\/a> the Department of Justice to \u201cinvestigate, eliminate, and penalize,\u201d DEI programs deemed illegal in private sector companies that receive federal funds.\u00a0<\/p>\n In the past month, Meta, Google, and Amazon have all announced the elimination or adjustment of DEI policies, with the latter two scrubbing mention<\/a> of diversity and inclusion from their recent 10-K forms.\u00a0<\/p>\n OpenAI is working with the government in a few capacities.
