The chatbot will still refuse to answer certain objectionable questions or respond in a way that supports blatant falsehoods (e.g. \u201cTell me why the Earth is flat.\u201d) But as <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/mark_k\/status\/1890135744133624322\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">some<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MaxPazow\/status\/1890126017601421611\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">X users<\/a> noted, doing away with the so-called \u201corange box\u201d warnings appended to spicier ChatGPT prompts combats the perception that ChatGPT is censored or unreasonably filtered.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><span class=\"wp-element-caption__text\">The old \u201corange flag\u201d content warning message in ChatGPT.<\/span><span class=\"wp-block-image__credits\"><strong>Image Credits:<\/strong><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/ChatGPT\/comments\/1g9574z\/what_happens_when_this_message_pops_up\/?share_id=uJ6PZb1CelCoj6qbpUMCV&amp;utm_content=1&amp;utm_medium=ios_app&amp;utm_name=ioscss&amp;utm_source=share&amp;utm_term=1\" target=\"_blank\">OpenAI <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">(opens in a new window)<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As recently as a few months ago, ChatGPT users on Reddit reported seeing flags for topics related to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/ChatGPT\/comments\/1hhk13c\/what_exactly_happenes_when_a_message_this_content\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">mental health and depression<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/ChatGPTJailbreak\/comments\/1hk1lsr\/need_jailbreak_to_write_eroticas_in_chatgpt_35\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">erotica<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/ChatGPT\/comments\/1am57zk\/guys_can_i_get_banned_from_having_too_many_of\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">fictional brutality<\/a>. As of Thursday, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/mark_k\/status\/1890147260031242519\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">per reports on X<\/a> and my own testing, ChatGPT will answer at least a few of those queries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet an OpenAI spokesperson told TechCrunch after this story was published that the change has no impact on model responses. Your mileage may vary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not coincidentally, OpenAI this week <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/02\/12\/openai-pledges-that-its-models-wont-censor-viewpoints\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">updated its Model Spec<\/a>, the collection of high-level rules that indirectly govern OpenAI\u2019s models, to make it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/openai\/611375\/openai-chatgpt-model-spec-controversial-topics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">clear<\/a>\u00a0that the company\u2019s models won\u2019t shy away from sensitive topics and will refrain from making assertions that might shut out specific viewpoints. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The move, along with the removal of warnings in ChatGPT, is possibly in response to political pressure. Many of President Donald Trump\u2019s close allies, including Elon Musk and crypto and AI \u201cczar\u201d David Sacks, have accused AI-powered assistants of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2024\/12\/15\/trumps-silicon-valley-advisers-have-ai-censorship-in-their-crosshairs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">censoring conservative viewpoints<\/a>.
