Legendary funk musician Sly Stone<\/strong>\u2018s daughter, Phunne Stone<\/strong>, has revealed in a new documentary that she tried snorting chalk as a child to emulate her father\u2019s cocaine use.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were out there [snorting] about 19 lines. We [were] sneezing and s\u2014,\u201d Phunne recalled in Hulu\u2019s doc Sly Lives! (aka the Burden of Black Genius)<\/em>, which was released on Thursday, February 13.<\/p>\n

The film delves into the highs and lows<\/a> of Sly\u2019s influential career with his band, Sly and the Family Stone, including his estrangement from his family and 1983 conviction<\/a> for cocaine possession. Phunne said in one scene that she would find \u201cfour or five razor blades\u201d around the house each time her father, 81, would visit during her childhood.<\/p>\n

\u201c[I lived] in an adult world, to where I thought I was grown,\u201d Phunne explained.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWhoopi Goldberg detailed the darkest parts of her life in her new book, Bits and Pieces: My Mother, My Brother, and Me, dedicated to her late mother, Emma Harris, and late brother, Clyde K. Johnson. \u201cNow, it\u2019s time for a book about my nucleus family: my brother, Clyde, and especially about my mother, because none [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

One particularly shocking moment in the film saw Phunne reminiscing about how she\u2019d once tried to imitate her father\u2019s cocaine use.<\/p>\n

\u201cI went and grabbed me one [of the razors] and my box of chalk and I said, \u2018We\u2019re gonna do what the grown folks do.\u2019 So I got my chalk and I chopped up about 37 lines of chalk out there and got the Monopoly money, rolled it up,\u201d she remembered.<\/p>\n

Phunne said that her late mother, Sly\u2019s former bandmate Cynthia Robinson<\/strong>, intervened in her attempt to snort the chalk and then violently punished her.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy mama came out and was like, \u2018What are you doing?!\u2019 I mean, it\u2019s green and pink [on my face], because you know the chalk [is] different colors,\u201d Phunne revealed. \u201cAnd I\u2019m telling mom, \u2018Nothing!\u2019 She beat the brakes off me.\u201d<\/p>\n

In another section of Sly Lives!<\/em>, Phunne offered a sympathetic explanation for her father\u2019s well-documented drug problem.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think that my dad is really actually shy, and I think drugs helped him be fearless,\u201d she argued. \u201cMy mom loved him more than any man. She never dated another man after my dad. But he wasn\u2019t always around when I lived with my mom.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her half-sister Novena Carmel<\/strong> recalled in the doc that she wasn\u2019t aware of her father\u2019s addiction as a very young child because she \u201cdidn\u2019t have a lot of interaction\u201d with him.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I was 10, I called his house and he was so out of it that he didn\u2019t even know who I was,\u201d she noted. \u201cI didn\u2019t like that. It was not a good feeling. At that point, I wanted something better for him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sly\u2019s son, Sylvester Stewart Jr<\/strong>, suggested that \u201chearing about [his dad] being arrested for drugs or whatever\u201d made for a tough childhood.<\/p>\n

\u201cI always wanted him to be the person that I was always told he was when I was a baby\u2026 These last few years are the most normal times I\u2019ve had with him,\u201d Sylvester said.<\/p>\n

The family went through periods of estrangement, especially during the times when Sly lived as a recluse, yet Phunne confirmed that she\u2019d reconnected with her dad as an adult.<\/p>\n

\u201cMissing all that time with him, it was rough. But we rekindled our relationship. When we saw each other, he cried, I cried, everybody around us was crying,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd we was hugging and shaking and all that.\u201d<\/p>\n

The musician did not address his daughters\u2019 recollections directly in Sly Lives!<\/em> because he chose not to participate in director Ahmir \u201cQuestlove\u201d Thompson<\/strong>\u2018s project. Stone told The Guardian<\/em> <\/a>in 2023 that he\u2019d \u201cgot clean\u201d in 2019.<\/p>\n
