The third season of Euphoria<\/em><\/a> has officially started filming after a major delay \u2014 but not every fan favorite is returning for more episodes of the show.<\/p>\n

Euphoria<\/em>, which premiered in 2019, follows troubled high school student<\/a> Rue (Zendaya<\/strong>) as she struggles to remain sober after rehab. The ensemble cast initially included Hunter Schafer, Alexa Demie, Jacob Elordi, Sydney Sweeney, Maude Apatow, Colman Domingo<\/strong> and more.<\/p>\n

The hit HBO series was quickly renewed for a second season after its premiere, but it took nearly three years for the episodes to air, with the network ordering two individual specials about the aftermath of Rue and Jules\u2019 (Schafer) breakup in the meantime.<\/a><\/p>\n

Season 3 was originally set to air on HBO in 2025 before facing several obstacles, including creator Sam Levinson<\/strong>\u2019s commitment to his short-lived series The Idol<\/em><\/a>. The dual WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, which took place in late 2023, prolonged the delay.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve been through strikes before, you know, they increase the cost,\u201d HBO CEO Casey Bloys<\/strong> said in November 2023 about production costs potentially increasing as a result. \u201cI don\u2019t see a scenario where I go, \u2018Well, I was going to make another tentpole show, but now I\u2019m not going to because we have to pay X amount more.\u2019 I don\u2019t think it works like that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Production was ultimately delayed again without an official start date. \u201cHBO and Yana Grebenyuk Sam Levinson remain committed to making an exceptional third season,\u201d a spokesperson for the network told Us Weekly<\/em> in March. \u201cIn the interim, we are allowing our in-demand cast to pursue other opportunities.\u201d<\/p>\n

It has since been confirmed that Euphoria<\/em> started<\/a> production in early 2025 \u2014 but several crucial cast members have confirmed their exits. Keep scrolling to see which Euphoria<\/em> characters are returning for season 3 \u2014 and which aren\u2019t:<\/p>\n

Before production began, Zendaya clarified that her busy schedule had nothing to do<\/a> with the wait. \u201cI will say, I have been off for a couple years,\u201d she told Vanity Fair<\/em> in November 2024 when asked about the show\u2019s future. \u201c[Euphoria is] not delayed because of [me] \u2026 I\u2019ve been open, just waiting.\u201d<\/p>\n

The actress said she was \u201cwaiting\u201d for updates on the hit HBO series, adding, \u201cI\u2019m actually going to start filming a project soon before Euphoria<\/em>, and I\u2019m like, \u2018Man, I\u2019m rusty. I haven\u2019t been on a set in, like, two years almost.\u2019 I\u2019m a little bit terrified. I\u2019m like, \u2018Can I even do this anymore?\u2019 I don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n

She concluded: \u201c[Euphoria<\/em>] is slated for January [2025], I believe. I haven\u2019t read anything yet, but I\u2019m excited to see what everyone has been working on, and what the future looks like for Euphoria<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Schafer mentioned on the \u201cCall Her Daddy\u201d podcast<\/a> in August 2024 that she has \u201cno f\u2014ing idea what\u2019s going on\u201d with season 3.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can ask literally all of the cast. The real tea is that a lot has happened,\u201d Schafer continued while addressing former costar Angus Cloud\u2019s death. \u201cI think everyone feels a certain sense of anticipation for if we are supposed to do season 3.\u201d<\/p>\n

She continued: \u201cObviously, I\u2019m still coming to terms about what\u2019s happened and losing people that we really loved and were a part of this family and everything. If we do go back, that\u2019s going to be tough.\u201d<\/p>\n

Even though the entire season hinted at Fez\u2019s (Angus Cloud) potential demise, it was actually his little brother that ended up dying after they were sold out to the police. Dane previously hinted at an unexpected journey for his character, telling Variety<\/em> in 2022, \u201cThere\u2019s gonna be redemption. I mean, that\u2019s the trajectory he\u2019s on [after being arrested]. I can\u2019t imagine Cal\u2019s life from solitary confinement. It\u2019s tough to work Cal into the story line when he\u2019s behind bars.\u201d<\/p>\n
