Paradise<\/em> has Gerald McRaney<\/strong> and James Marsden<\/strong> facing off as father and son, which came rather easy to them.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe just fell into it,\u201d McRaney, 77, exclusively told Us Weekly<\/em>. \u201cJames is an incredibly good actor and we just picked up on each other\u2019s vibe. There was no particular effort in getting that chemistry. I often equate working with people like that with athletics. The great thing about working with a great athlete is it ceases to be a chore and starts being fun, even though it\u2019s a brutally hard thing to do.\u201d<\/p>\n

McRaney compared playing sports to his own craft, adding, \u201cIt\u2019s the same thing with acting. Acting can be brutally hard. I\u2019ve been in things that were brutally hard, but when you\u2019re working with really great people, you go back to playing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Paradise<\/em>, which premiered in January, initially appeared to be set in a serene and wealthy community forced to face the realities of a shocking murder. In typical creator Dan Fogelman fashion, however, a twist at the end of the premiere<\/a> revealed Paradise was actually an underground bunker housing the world\u2019s most prominent individuals after an apocalyptic event destroyed the rest of humanity.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tCourtesy of Disney Hulu is keeping a tight lid on most plot details involving This Is Us creator Dan Fogelman\u2018s mysterious new political thriller Paradise. According to the synopsis, Paradise is \u201cset in a serene, wealthy community inhabited by some of the world\u2019s most prominent individuals. But this tranquility explodes when a shocking murder occurs [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The twists kept on coming when Marsden, 51, was killed minutes into<\/a> the first episode. While it was already revealed that Paradise<\/em> would be following the high stakes investigation into Cal\u2019s death, the show has introduced several suspects who could have benefited from the former president\u2019s murder.<\/p>\n

\u201cI pretty much knew it wasn\u2019t me. But with Dan, you never know,\u201d McRaney quipped to Us<\/em>. \u201cI [was just] excited to be on this show because Dan Fogelman<\/strong> is a genius and the stuff that he writes [are so good]. The twists are one thing but what I find wonderful about his writing is his dialogue, his sense of drama and also his sense of humor. He weaves it all together and it\u2019s just great fun to play.\u201d<\/p>\n

As Hulu released more episodes, viewers got a larger glimpse into Cal\u2019s<\/a> tumultuous relationship with his father, Kane. McRaney appreciated the chance to develop a complicated character who struggled with pushing his son into the career he felt he was destined for.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe thing I had in mind \u2014 and I don\u2019t know if Dan did or not \u2014 but Joseph P. Kennedy Sr.<\/strong> had the same sort of problems there. I don\u2019t think his sons were as reluctant as Cal to pursue these things,\u201d he noted. \u201cBut I think Joe Kennedy had two things going. One was he wanted the power for the Kennedy family but the other thing was he truly believed that if you\u2019ve been given great wealth, then you\u2019ve got great responsibility and you\u2019re supposed to do good in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

McRaney continued: \u201cThere\u2019s that bizarre combination of being power hungry and being benevolent all at the same time. So it\u2019s a complicated thing in this business of pushing your son to get great power.\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition to having a tense relationship with his son, Kane is also dealing with<\/a> dementia.<\/p>\n

The series is described as \u201ca realistic examination of the [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cWalking that fine line when somebody has dementia is they also have moments \u2014 at least this has been my experience \u2014 where there are moments of absolute clarity. Then they fade back into that sort of netherworld of dementia \u2014 that downward spiral,\u201d McRaney explained. \u201cBut there are moments of clarity and that\u2019s basically what I tried to do with it and with that knowledge that he has. Those flashes of clarity can be frightening to him and dreadful.\u201d<\/p>\n
