Karla Sofia Gascon is under fire for past tweets<\/p>\n
\nThe 52-year-old star – who recently became the first trans person to be nominated for an Oscar – is currently keeping a low profile after past inflammatory tweets from 2016-2020 recently resurfaced and the filmmaker admitted he has no interest in getting in touch with her until she takes full “accountability” for her actions.<\/p>\n
\nHe told Deadline: “I haven\u2019t spoken to her, and I don\u2019t want to. She is in a self-destructive approach that I can\u2019t interfere in, and I really don\u2019t understand why she\u2019s continuing. <\/p>\n
\n“Why is she harming herself? Why? I don\u2019t understand it, and what I don\u2019t understand about this too is why she\u2019s harming people who were very close to her. <\/p>\n
\n“I\u2019m thinking in this thing of how hurting others, of how she\u2019s hurting the crew and all these people who worked so incredibly hard on this film. I\u2019m thinking of myself, I\u2019m thinking of Zoe [Salda\u00f1a] and Selena [Gomez]. I just don\u2019t understand why she\u2019s continuing to harm us.<\/p>\n
\n“I\u2019m not getting in touch with her because right now she needs space to reflect and take accountability for her actions…<\/p>\n
\n“She\u2019s really playing the victim. She\u2019s talking about herself as a victim, which is surprising. It\u2019s as if she thought that words don\u2019t hurt.”<\/p>\n
\nKarla’s tweets included posts about the murder of George Floyd, the Muslim community, and diversity at the Oscars and Jacques branded her comments “inexcusable”.<\/p>\n
\nAnd the 72-year-old director is “very sad” that the controversy has overshadowed his movie’s 13 Oscar nominations.<\/p>\n
\nHe said: “Very unfortunately, it is taking up all the space, and that makes me very sad.<\/p>\n
\n“It\u2019s very hard for me to think back to the work I did with Karla Sof\u00eda. The trust we shared, the exceptional atmosphere that we had on the set that was indeed based on trust. <\/p>\n
\n“And when you have that kind of relationship and suddenly you read something that that person has said, things that are absolutely hateful and worthy of being hated, of course that relationship is affected. It\u2019s as if you fall into a hole. Because what Karla Sof\u00eda said is inexcusable.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nIn a lengthy social media post, Karla had addressed the backlash by apologising \u201cto all those who have felt bad about the way I have expressed myself at any stage of my life.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nShe also wrote: “\u201cI cannot repair my past actions, I can only say that today I am not the same person as 10 or 20 years ago, that although I had not committed any crime, I was not perfect either, I am not even now.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cI just try to learn and be a better person every day.\u201d<\/p>\n
