Karla Sof\u00eda Gasc\u00f3n<\/strong> has alienated another ally. In a candid interview with Deadline<\/a>, Emilia P\u00e9rez<\/em> director Jacques Audiard<\/strong> revealed that he has put distance between himself and his Oscar-nominated star amid her messy social media scandal<\/a>. \u201cI haven\u2019t spoken to her, and I don\u2019t want to,\u201d Audiard told the outlet.<\/p>\n Last week a scandal erupted after journalist Sarah Hagi<\/strong> unearthed a number of racist and Islamophobic posts<\/a>, made over the span of several years, from Gasc\u00f3n\u2019s personal X account. After the initial thread went viral, internet sleuths discovered multiple other offensive remarks posted on Gasc\u00f3n\u2019s feed, with subjects including George Floyd, an Oscars ceremony, and even, allegedly, her Emilia P\u00e9rez<\/em> costar Selena Gomez.<\/strong> In the aftermath, Gasc\u00f3n deactivated her X account<\/a> and issued a series of apologies, while simultaneously alleging that some of the tweets, like the one about Gomez, were completely fabricated. \u201cAs someone in a marginalized community, I know this suffering all too well and I am deeply sorry to those I have caused pain,\u201d said Gasc\u00f3n in her first public apology. \u201cAll my life I have fought for a better world. I believe light will always triumph over darkness.\u201d<\/p>\n In the days that followed, Gasc\u00f3n continued to release apologies and statements on her Instagram<\/a> account and even made a guest appearance on CNN, setting up the interview without Netflix\u2019s assistance or knowledge. \u201cI have been judged, condemned, sacrificed, crucified, and stoned without a trial and without the option to defend myself,\u201d Gasc\u00f3n said in the sit-down, which was translated from Spanish by CNN<\/a>.<\/p>\n Gasc\u00f3n, the first openly trans person to land an acting nomination at the Academy Awards, has since become a liability<\/a> for the Emilia P\u00e9rez<\/em> team. \u201cI don\u2019t have any tolerance for any negative rhetoric towards people of any group,\u201d her costar Zoe Salda\u00f1a,<\/strong> also an Oscar nominee, said<\/a> at a recent Emilia P\u00e9rez<\/em> screening. Netflix has reportedly distanced itself<\/a> from the titular star as well, with images of Gasc\u00f3n omitted from a recent FYC campaign poster; Vanity Fair<\/em> has learned that the streamer is no longer in direct communication with the actor.<\/p>\n And neither, apparently, is Audiard. In the Deadline interview, the French director said the situation was \u201cvery unfortunately\u201d taking over the conversation around the movie, later adding that he had not spoken to Gasc\u00f3n about the controversy. \u201cShe is in a self-destructive approach that I can\u2019t interfere in, and I really don\u2019t understand why she\u2019s continuing,\u201d Audiard said. \u201cWhy is she harming herself? Why? I don\u2019t understand it, and what I don\u2019t understand about this, too, is why she\u2019s harming people who were very close to her.\u201d<\/p>\n Audiard also did not sound moved by Gasc\u00f3n\u2019s repeated apologies and statements. He believes she is \u201creally playing the victim,\u201d he said, and that what Gasc\u00f3n allegedly said in the past is \u201cinexcusable.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cShe\u2019s talking about herself as a victim, which is surprising. It\u2019s as if she thought that words don\u2019t hurt,\u201d he continued. \u201cI\u2019m not getting in touch with her because right now she needs space to reflect and take accountability for her actions.\u201d<\/p>\n Audiard also used the interview to address other criticisms lobbed at his film. He clarified comments he previously made about Spanish being \u201ca language of modest countries, of developing countries, of the poor and immigrants,\u201d saying that his intention was to make an international film. \u201cThere\u2019s not a lot of languages that you have to choose from,\u201d he said. \u201cThere\u2019s English and there\u2019s Spanish, and Spanish is such a rich language that crosses borders.\u201d He also expressed regret over, and provided an explanation for, the choice to shoot Emilia P\u00e9rez<\/em> in France rather than Mexico, where the film is set. \u201cThe public funding for film in Mexico was not as good for us as what was\u2026available to us in France through these extraordinary institutions, the CNC and regional film funding,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n Emilia P\u00e9rez<\/em> is nominated for 13 Oscars, with Gasc\u00f3n and Salda\u00f1a nominated in the lead- and supporting-actress categories, respectively, and Audiard nominated for five awards, including best director, best adapted screenplay, and best picture. Gasc\u00f3n previously shared that despite the controversy, she has no plans to walk away from her historic nomination<\/a>. \u201cI cannot step down from an Oscar nomination because I have not committed any crime, nor have I harmed anyone,\u201d said Gasc\u00f3n, according to CNN. \u201cI am neither racist nor anything that all these people have tried to make others believe I am.\u201d<\/p>\n Audiard, however, may feel differently. \u201cI\u2019m thinking in this thing of how hurting others, of how she\u2019s hurting the crew and all these people who worked so incredibly hard on this film,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m thinking of myself, I\u2019m thinking of Zoe [Salda\u00f1a] and Selena [Gomez].
